Limitations of tuning pd100 engine

Featured Replies

When looking at the limitations of tuning the pd100 engine past 235 lbft/ 150 bhp what would members consider is the MAIN limitation:

1/ Size/ capacity of vnt15 turbo

2/ Intercooler related

3/ Injector related

I would appreciate your thoughts.

Has anyone tested a cupra intake that his been remapped ?

Believe Andy_Ellis got his map tweaked with the Cupra intake on, and I'm pretty sure Jason is running with the Cupra intake too, but I don't know if he's been tweaked yet :D

As for limitations, I would probably say all 3 play a factor as if you fix one of them, you're probably going to hit limitations for the other two pretty quickly.... but I'm sure someone who knows what they're talking about will be along shortly ;)

Suspect it will be fuel-supply related - unless your getting a sooty exhaust, then you can't guarantee you're getting the maximum amount of fuel combusted. It's only at the point that you're getting uncombusted fuel that you should need to look at improving the amount of oxygen going into the engine...

I have the cupra intake, but not remapped on it yet, so running 151bhp at the moment with 280 lb/ft torque. I think the main limitation is the injectors, mine are flowing at only just below the maximum they can. The turbo maybe can go higher, but not certain. Also not sure on the intercooler. I'm hoping if I went back to Jabba they could get me close to 160hp, but in the meantime I have other plans possibly afoot, so holding back. ;)

Thanks for replying.

Picking up the cupra intake mods tomorrow!

The reason i ask the questions is that allard's think thst the turbo will not produce more power than 160 bhp because of the small size and the limitations on revolutions.

Any thoughts - disagreements or otherwise.

Cheers

John

160hp is a pretty decent level of HP in my opinion, given they come out the factory with only 100hp. ;) 160+ is only achievable with much more drastic engine mods. ;)

Quite possibly - however, are you after increasing peak power, or making the car more driveable? Larger turbo will result in a larger lag, so you might find that off-the-line performance suffers...

Yep worth looking at hybrid turbos or maybe a twin turbo setup for the best of both worlds :D

The clutch :D

Guys,

What I am trying to weight up is that allards say that 160bhp is poss with a rechip and intercooler for around

I believe with the right mods, Jabba should be able to achieve 160hp from the PD100 engine/turbo. I.e with cupra intake, green panel filter, decatted exhaust, I reckon its possible. However, I'm not sure I'm going to be able to prove this in the long run as there's other stuff afoot.

Its the intercooler that will add 5-10bhp. Also you won't suffer from heat soak as much as others, which means in Summer your performance will remain consistent whilst other will drop off.

Iam not looking to use full power alot of the time. Just when some petrol head cuts me up - lol.

Okay slightly different question, does anyone know of a turbo diesel car running a garrett vnt15 turbo with more than 160 bhp 250 lb/ft?

Best wishes

John

the turbo will be overspeeding at the 150-160 BHP mark so you will start having problems, plus the clutches don't like it! Helix have just finished bench testing of there new unit. but it will cost around

Hi Guys - some more thoughts

Rather than going for the traditional phase 2 conversion - remap + intercooler

How about hybrid turbo + inlet manifold + remap + intercooler spray. The spray would be a temporary measure until I could a larger intercooler.

Both ways would cost around

would the turbo/manifold/remap/IC spray be that cheap?

Sounds good if you can get it for 1K though.
