Can someone recommend me some silicone grease for the cv boots

I would of thought any would be fine.

I know some say they are really prone to splitting but from personal experience my old Superb had done 90K in 6 1/2 years and they were still OK, I changed one on SWMBO's Golf that is the same age but has done 130K and that was just beginning to go - the OE one and replacement was more of a flexible plastic than rubber so I can't see silicone helping much.

On the Octy II at least, they are PU not rubber, so I'm not sure how much grease will help.

Midland Silicones MS4 is the grease I use on the Superb's boots.

Transverse power units have boots with more pleats which are less prone to splitting.

Would someone be kind enough to explain what actually has to be done when greasing the CV boots? Are they easilya ccessible or do I need to jack the car up? Is it a case of just apply the grease to the visible pleats...

I'm determined to make this car a runner by doing as much of the 'perventative' stuff that I can!

Dead easy. Jack the car up for the front wheel that you want to do. Lie on the floor at the front of the car and reach round into the cente of the brake disc from the engine side of the disc. You will see / feel a rubber concertina covering. Smear some grease on your fingers ( better with a latex glove or similar), get someone to rotate the wheel slowly by hand and just gently grab hold of the concertina covering, which will now be rotating within your grasp. Just work it in as best you can to the all the valleys and peaks in the rubber. When it's done, the rubber will probably feel a lot more pliable than it did when you started.

Just make sure you remove excess MS4 because that stuff will just attract all sorts of abrasives and give more trouble than it's worth.

Just after I bought my car I notices that both outer CV boots were gone, so I bought a set of GKN ones from GSF and had them fitted, so far so good (10k miles).

This should do

Looks fine.

Keep all silicone compounds well away from your eyes. I use disposable gloves to coat the pleats of the boots, then wipe off the excess grease with a rag. You don't want road grit sticking to the boots or else the rubber will be ground away.
