New car tyre wear

Featured Replies

Just done 800 miles in my new car and noticed a problem with scuffed front tyre wear. Booked into the dealer next week to sort things out hopefully. Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Depends what you mean by scuffed. Obviously the weight of the car and the fact that it runs in front wheel drive most of the time means that the outer edges of the front tyres will likely show noticeable wear first.

Not wishing to insult your intelligence so assuming pressures are correct and your driving style is not too aggresive on turn in (which promotes wear).

Again, forgive me if I'm stating the obvious, but legally the outer and inner eighth only needs to have visible tread (around the entire circumference) it's the inner three quarters of the tyre which needs a minimum of 1.6mm (again around the entire circumference). This allows for the wear characteristics of modern low profile tyres.

My first Superb II wore its outer edges down quite quickly, but the front tyres would have legally lasted around 15-16,000 miles.

So, if you still think yours are wearing excessively having regard to the above, perhaps you need a tracking check?

Mark.

The green indicator band is showing through on both fronts, the front offside tyre the most. There is a marked difference when compared with the rear tyres.

I have been driving very steadily and not aggressive during the running in period.

I agree that most of the drive is going to the front but this kind of wear seems odd after only 800 miles.

I'll get the dealer to check the tracking next week.

Phil.
