20v Fabia

Featured Replies

I'm having a think and due to the fact that my mpi is doing pony mpg (and im not really a diesel man). I'm seriously looking into doing an AGU (larger valve'd head cheaper to source no fly by wire imo stronger) swap in the new year.

I've done a few 20v swaps in the past but i'm unsure when it comes to the fabia.

Does anyone know if it will mate to the mpi box? and what power will these comfortably take? will the mk4 box go in? or am i alternatively better off fitting a vrs box?

Am i right in thinking that the vrs runs a different subframe has this anything to do with boxes?

VRS/Non-VRS shafts are they any different flanges lengths etc?

Obvious choice would be mk7 gti polo but this would incur larger costs and clock etc coding issues. I know i can get the immob removed easily on an agu and wire it up to mk2 golf wiring and as mine is a 'classic' the wiring is simpler and immob non existant. Not sure yet though as whether to run stock management or standalone such as mbe via qpeng.

Engine mount im not afraid to fab one up but is there an off the shelf solution using parts from other vags?

I know of one being built at the moment that is very close to finish and isn't standard either :).

MPi isnt a bad start, 2.0 Fabia is perfect as the block is the same basic design etc. Basically all the mounts etc are off the shelf, you need an 02J or 02R gearbox which will bolt up, 02M can be used with vRS shafts and mountings, all run hydraulic clutch which makes things straight forward.

Subframe and n/s console is different for six speed box, it has a dip in it to clear the diff.

Legendary... I've been thinking about getting in a 2.0 to to break to they run different hubs and shafts to the mpi?

The 2.0 runs the same hubs and brakes as the vRS so yeah, you can fit 312mm etc straight onto them.

2.0 is perfect as you can just remove the engine and drop the 1.8T in its place.

Got some silly ideas planned out in my head for my MPi in a few years time I think, not going 20VT though.

yep been done a couple of times before but there is going to be a special one finished very soon that will rock big time

Cheers for the help mate...was waiting for a barage of sell it and buy a vrs!

Just want to give it about 180-200bhp as i think thats enough for road use in a fabia...but as you can guess by the choice of agu i want to leave my options open...

Anyone know much more about those greek turbo'd 1.4mpi's on youtube...i have a fabrication shop i can borrow and silly thoughts in my head...all i can understand is they are running a piggy back with a pair of supra injectors as the turbo'd saxo kids used to...they claim 200bhp but im struggling to see it? and if its just youtube bravado...although they seem to be running wossners and the like

link added;

any pics of the previous converted cars?

I dont know of any other ones done in the UK other than the one being built at the moment (other than WRC jobbies) but its mechanically identical to the Ibiza FR and Cupra and also as you mention the Polo GTi, so its not ground breaking as such but never the less a good idea.

I have an MPi that is pretty heavily modded and its begging for another engine to be dropped in which i plan to do one day, ive had two vRS's and fancy something different.

Keep up the good work, a man after my own heart :)

i had this thought in my head too (after previously owning a more powerful car than my present 'elegance', mk1 golf 16v on twin 40's and standalone) so i know a wee bit about old school tuning/engine swapping...

I do have a few mates who are into their newer VAG's so i don't think it should be too much hassle/work!! (although i think i'd rather 20vT a mk1), but if i did do this to the fabia, what would be needed, and can i do it stage at a time to make it seem as if i'm not spending too much although i will be!!

Ie, can i do the brakes, then suspension etc, or does it all have to be at once, parts not fitting/matching etc...

Basically i have a 1.4 16v elegance, here's my thoughts...

Suspension, Have coilovers just now, not the best but should suffice for a while...

Brakes, currently 255 fronts and 232 rears, rears will be fine, but can i do the brakes first, will bigger discs such as VRS ones fit onto my hubs, or will i need to change hubs/carriers, bearings etc??

Transmission, to save on costs go for the 5 speed to save costs, which one is best (or is the 6 speed worth the extra $$?

Engine, probably go for AGU as previously stated by IMS,

Will polo downpipe fit, qpeng management??

If it all seems not to bad, i will start on this in the new year, but new brakes will come first and i may as well upgrade the now to bigger ones.

cheers

Edit, i have 16's and would prefer to keep this size!! also, will the 1.4 16v master cylinder cope with the bigger callipers?

You have to use vrs/2.0 hubs to go to 288mm plus

IMO having run cars with both 5 and 6 in the past i personally think the 5 is fine...

either go qpeng or de-immob the stock ecu...plenty of threads on this on the net

my friend is doing an S3'd Lupo Gti... 4wd the full works 8)

Will these work just now with my 1.4 drive shafts?? i don't see why not if i get my flanges pressed into the vrs hubs or are they just the same??

The flanges are part of the wheel bearing as its a hub unit. But the bearings are the same shaft wise anyhow, I fitted vRS bearings and hubs to my MPi and the shafts popped straight in. But the inboard ends are the wrong size for a 02R/J gearbox, and the shafts a different diameter.

thatl be a beast emoticon-0148-yes.gif

cool cool, will try and source a set of vrs hubs

thinking more and more about the 6 speed, found a vrs subframe for £50, not too bad i thought!!

Good luck getting hold of vRS bearing carriers, they are like rocking horse poop.

Prices of new ones are in the 312mm pictorial thread.
