This is what I sent in via email today:

Hello, I took my car in for a service at xxxxxxx and asked them to look at a rumbling noise from the rear. I was advised that it was 'sawtoothing' of the rear tyres. I was told that it’s an inherent fault with the car. I asked for the geometry to be checked and was told that they could not do this.

It’s not acceptable to have a noisy car because of incorrect geometry settings.

On top of that I was allowed to drive for a number of days with an illegal tyre. I was not made aware that the tyre was illegal. It was only when the very worn inside edge of the tyre got a puncture that the tyre fitter showed me. I was shocked.

I telephoned the dealer and he said that it was a miscommunication. In my opinion it is unacceptable to allow a car back out on to the road if it is not roadworthy. Simply telling the client that you have no tyres in stock is not the same as saying, "we have no tyres in stock but we must warn you that the rear tyre is illegal".

I would like to know what you are going to do about the noisy rear tyres that are 'sawtoothing'. The uneven wear means that instead of the tyres lasting 30,000 they will only be lasting between 20 and 25,000.

I'll let you know what they say. Not holding my breath though and as I have a tyre agreement its not my money when i take them back in because of the noise.

Perhaps we could get everyone with this issue to send the same basic email to Skoda? Surely if enough people complain then they will have to do something about it.

Same email to VW, SEAT and Audi and I should imagine they have all had them.

Now all reply with the same generic bulletin saying tyre wear and be down to a great many things such as loading, tyre pressures and road conditions and also driving style.

I see it a lot at work (and have done on all four main brands) but more often or not its down to under inflated tyres, typical one is someone reading the info inside the fuel flap and setting tyres to 22psi not 2.2 bar.

As for doing something about it? Dont hold your breath it would mean redesigning the rear axle.

Whilst I agree the dealer was at fault not advising you clearly about the condition of the rear tyres, you need to take responsibility for the roadworthiness of the vehicle you're driving - don't rely on others to do this for you.

I check my tyres regularly - its the only way to know you're safe. In doing so you'll probably see the problem before it becomes an issue.

Sorry if it sounds like preaching, but it really ****es me off when i see cars with illegal and dangerous tyres - so many people seem to think its acceptable to wear them until they're bald or the dealer tells them to change or if it fails its mot. This really makes me angry.. I've been hit from behind by a guy with bald tyres who was unable to stop from 20mph in the wet.

I predict you will get no joy whatsoever on any issue you mailed CS about.

While I agree sawtoothing is a PITA 25K out a set of tyres is probably within reasonable life expectancy.

The geometry issue and illegal tyre issue are dealer issues IMO.

Skoda recon that they expect 30k out of the rears.

They might of got 30k out of them had it not been for the 2mm left on the inside edge. Shall have to keep a close eye on them.

The tyre depths across that tyre from outside to inside were: 4mm 6mm 2mm

Alarming.

IIRC the tread depth requirement of 1.6mm only applies to the middle 75% of the width of the tyre.

Well they replied.

They said that it is a charactistic of the car, they don't know why. He also wasn't aware of Skoda announcing new settings for the geometry then changing their minds.

His brilliant advice: Don't use Dunlop or Bridgestone tyres. At least I think it was bridgestone. I was on the floor at that point.

hahahahahaha

So the £880 pounds worth(national tyres price) of Dunplop SportMaxx GT's that came on the car are 5hite according to Skoda.

I asked why should i have to put up with tyres that prematurely wear on the inside edge and make a bearing type noise.
