Airbag light

Featured Replies

Hi all.

Removed the Airbag and steering wheel to get the instrument panel out. On refitting, the Airbag light comes on for the self test then goes out for a second and comes on again and stays on. Have triple checked everything i did and all looks ok, Airbag handled with care. Only thing i did differently was reconnect the battery with the Airbag still removed to check the faulty panel illumination bulb was fixed before putting it all back together. Is there a simple way to reset the system, i disconnected the battery for 10 mins but no joy. Cheers for any help.

You'll need VAG-com/VCDS or a suitable standalone diagnostic reader to reset the fault code in the airbag control unit. Connecting the battery with any airbag unplugged will trigger a fault.

Many thanks for the reply.

Ive found a code reader on *bay (U280 OBD2 etc) which looks right, it reads and clears fault codes so hopefully problem sorted. Cheers.

I can confirm the VAG 405 MaxiScan that I picked up for £44 inc next day postage on ebay worked for me (as I ignored the Haynes advice to disconnect the battery). That's on a 2000 1.3 MPI, the connector being in the drivers side footwell.

Into airbag screen, read codes, and it displayed 2 unknown codes (I didn't look them up), just cleared them and a few seconds later the airbag light went out.

Bought a code reader from Amazon (£20). It found 3 codes, 1 engine and 2 SRS and cleared them all. Problem solved, thanks all
