Can´t really say where the pic is taken, but I am pretty sure I can rule out Las Vegas and Sahara...

I know it well, we often go walking in that area - if you head towards Hay from that spot there's a little track that runs off to the left about 2 miles from there - great place to try the Scout out, but watch the ground clearance about half way down!

I believe the opening scenes of "An American Werewolf in London" were filmed at that very spot... the bit where they are in the back of a lorry with lots of sheep!
