Suspension knocks, how to avoid?

Featured Replies

Is there any way to avoid the knocking when getting things like coilovers, after meeting vrs turbo last night he told me even his weitec coilovers had a slight knock, and he had a friend who replaced all the bushes etc but had coilovers still knocking.

Is there any difference on dampers/shocks and springs? A mechanic mate was saying knocking probably occurs when re using oem top mounts, but this shouldn't be an issue on coilovers as you use the ones provided.

The usual cause after dropping the supension is the ARB rubbing on the drive shaft and mostly when having the steering on full lock. The easiest cure is by using shorter drop links. Mine does this only on full left hand lock as I have Eibach sportine springs which drop the car by 25mm. The lower you go the more rubbing or knocking you get.

i see, so are the shorter droplinks avaliable to buy?

And what do people reccomend, dampers and springs or coilovers?

I imagine coilover will upset the car alot more than just shocks and springs

Some coilovers dont need shorter drop links, some do. Mine knocks slightly, its part and parcel of having the drop i think

Matt

Any ideas which do not need to shorter drop links?

and again if anyone knows about shocks and springs not knocking, that would be great :D

old mk1 mondeo drop links... hang on ill get the number

i think from memory these are what i use, firstline part no' fdl6354 emoticon-0148-yes.gif oh and it still knocks a little but havent fitted the spring covers given by KW yet so that may help......possibly.....not convinced tho

Doesn't matter which system you go for the lower you go, the more knocking happens. I assume you haven't decided yet, so is the new suspension for road or track or just for looks?

Everyday road use really. It just seems a real shame you can't lower the car without this knocking.

I would rather coilovers but I am certainly being pulled toward dampers and springs, seem to have a lot less problems and much more oem

They folded with you too then? lol

Aparently the KW/Weitec/AP setups dont need shorter links (or so i have been told) the knocking Ad Lav found was the top 2 coils knocking together which the sleeves cure.

i had done bushes/topmounts and it did not cure it........ get those sleeves on....

I would say go for coilovers any day over shocks and springs. as the coilover kits are designed to work togheter, where as with springs and shocks you are mixing and matching.

(usless info time : Eibach coilovers are not 100% eibach, the shocks are from KW and they drop there springs round them)

i wasnt sure at the time whether the links would be required but there on and dont do any harm emoticon-0148-yes.gif .... i do remember the thread from a few mth back about this, me you and ad-lav had plenty to discuss from memory and i got the sleeves as result of that, are they easy to fit whilst in-situ? [posh word for whilst still on the car] emoticon-0136-giggle.gif must give them a try, only really noticed the knock again since ive lifted her up for winter emoticon-0112-wondering.gif

Took my mechanic 2 hours to fit 1 :giggle: spring off the car.

ill leave that then emoticon-0136-giggle.gif .....

Do it, as over time your coil will snap...... and any signs of the spring going it will Fail an MOT

Mix and match or not it is still the same structure and design as an oem springs and shocks.

So you need to get the coilovers and then sleeves aswell?! Blimey!

Can you get these sleeves from weitec? They gt hicon coilovers from them are a very reasonable price

Anyone on here with shocks and springs? Not very much conclusive evidence so far

Pm damian from dpm performance. He should be able to sort you out the coilovers and the sleeves. He was waiting for a pn off kw lasr time we spoke. He's a good guy and really helpfull.
