knock knock :(

Featured Replies

hi all

i fitted my coil overs with my friend in his garage and all was going on until we tried to pull away and there was no movement just a grinding noise :/ we discovered the drive shaft had come out the cv joint, after several attemps to get it back in we called the rac who managed to get it back in but had to cut the cv boot, i drove the car for about 100 miles with a bodge of a cv joint (worked wonders!!)

i had the cv boot replaced and im not sure if it's lack of grease or something like that but since i got the car back it's developed a knocking noise :/ it happens when i push the clutch in and release it, also changing gear and when i press the throttle i hear the knock, it seems to be when power is either taken off or appilied which is pushing me to a broken cv joint but my thoughts are also maybe something in the gear box as my mechanic had trouble getting the cv joint back on and maybe his hitting on the joint has moved something in the gearbox,

it seems to be a very regular thing and i can make it knock without trying,

i dont want to spend money on a drive shaft if's the gear box ;/

many thanks

who's there?

If you drove the car for 100ish miles in the current weather with your CV joint lacking a proper sealing boot and however much grease you lost out of it you'll probably find its that. Does the car make any noises when you have the steering on full lock then apply a little power ( just enough to get slight acceleration to put pressure on the joint). If the CV joint is knackered it will grind or knock (it may do it when turning one way but not the other due to the diff).

It could also be something like the engine mount. If you didn't have it lowered before, the suspension could have been taking the strain and made the knock un-noticable - but if you have it dropped now, all the strain is on those mounts (ie the rear of the car doesn't drop/raise when accelerating/braking etc).

Its doubtful to be the gearbox, but quite likely to be either (if not both) of the other two options (driveshaft/mounts). CV joints aren't supposed to pull apart, you'll probabably find you've lost something internal from it or gained something (grime/****) inside it.

Those are my two plausable suspects.
