Rearview Mirror Rattling

Featured Replies

Hi, for the past 4 to 5 months my Octy has had a really annoying rattle/vibration which seemed to eminate from the dash when accelarating or driving over rough ground. I took the centre of the dash apart, stereo out etc and drove it around with SWMBO searching for the rattle, but to no avail. Then, last week, I was driving along, listening to the rattle and I grabbed the rearview mirror and it stopped buzzing. I moved the mirror slightly and its not rattling as much. Has anyone else had this issue with the mirror ?

Sorry forgot to mention the mirror is the dimming sort.

Yes, I had exactly this problem with the auto-dimming mirror on mine and had the whole mirror unit replaced under warranty a few weeks ago.

The casing of the original mirror looked as though it had either been levered apart previously, or had left the factory not properly assembled whereas the new one looks to fit together properly and doesn't rattle at all.

The on/off button on the bottom of my auto dimming mirror rattled like a ****** until I 'corrected' it. I also had a rattle from the sunglasses holder, mainly due to the contents.........

Yes had this problem, took ages to isolate it. I just give the mirror a squeeze every now and again.

Yes, its amazing how long it took me to find it. I was actually going to leave it until the next service to bring it up with the dealer, but at least I've found out what it was. Cheers guys.

I have this rattle now as well. Took me ages to diagnose. Had my windshield replaced recently and it's actually the small wire holder connecting the light sensor to the headliner that isn't fixed in position anymore and rattles.

Can anyone let me know how if this holder (it's like a small plastic tube) is supposed to be fixed? At the end where it meets the headliner there is a small T-like thing which I suppose would be somehow fixed, either by being glued to the windshield or by actually going under the headliner. Except mine isn't either glued or under the headliner, it simply touches the headliner but is not fixed. As a result it rattles at around 2000rpm.

adjusting mine gives me a little break, but it happens at certain revs. Might try the squeeze!  :D

You've perhaps sorted this by now, but I originally blamed the little plastic cable tube for the rattle, tried wedging it with bits of card, insulation tape etc, as did the dealer first off, which made no difference. It isn't meant to be fixed to anything, and the cause of my rattle was definitely the mirror casing itself. The replacement mirror is still rattle free nearly four years on, with the tube still loose.
