Keys lost/stolen

Featured Replies

Afternoon all.

I wont go into details for security reasons but i lsot my keys at my place of work. Other have access to the area. I came out to find the car still there, but it looked like someone may have been in it as the windscreen was partly defrosted.

i have the car back safely with my spare but dont know what to do next?

i assume that if i need to change locks etc it will be massive cost??

can anybody advise me of my options please - very worried tonight...

luke

Does insurance cover lost keys? I think house insurance might well do if you're lucky. . .

Assuming you want to change the keys (if it was a staff member that stole them I'd guess they'd have access to the car again tomorrow) then you'll need new ignition barrel, door barrels and maybe a recoding of the imobiliser. Plus another key as a backup.

Is there a chance the person with the key can get your home address? If so I'd leave it at a friends tonight or something, somewhere it won't be easy to relate to you.

Good luck getting it sorted either way.

Would it not be possible to have new keys from a dealer and re-code the immobiliser so although the old keys could be used to get in the car it couldn't be started ?

if you recode the key you have got then as said the other will still open it but it wont start

Don't worry about it, if the car gets stolen youll have an idea of who took it.

Depends on how many people he works with.

Oh, so that's alright then.

New lock set is only the ignition and one door anyhow.

Heres what i would do, one as it would be a laugh (if you can see the funny side in this situation) and two, you'd know somebody was in about your car...

Take out starter fuse, this way they won't know whats up hopefully and your car will still be there at the end of day, now the 'fun' bit :giggle:

When getting out the car, tie a piece of fishing line between the two front doors (rears too if you wish) with the window down when doors are closed so you can get it tight, then lock car manually and hold in lock position (should automatically close the windows) and lie and wait, or just go see after work  Maybe even leave a bunch of pound coins in the ash tray in view to entice them in hoping no other scum are about that would smash and grab...

thats what i'd do, but then i'm like that and i bought my car for £500 and wouldn't care :giggle:

genius

also hook it up to the mains when you are at home

I'd suggest recoding the keys to stop the lost key from remote unlocking and starting the car, that way they can open the car with the actual key in the drivers door lock but it should activate the alarm if they don't start the car in a short while (which they won't be able to do).

We can do that for you for £30 if you'd like.

What have the Police advised? (You've presumably reported it - if not you should)

If it's insured I wouldn't worry about it but it depends on the type of people in your work if you think they would be willing to go to jail for stealing a car if they got caught.

I certainly wouldn't let it bother me

i'd unlatch the back seat, and hide in the boot with a shotgun. they get in, flap goes down then you just say "oh you've found my keys, can i have them back please?"lol
