HELP air lock in heater matrix

Featured Replies

hey does any1 kno how to easily bleed the heater matrix in the coolant system

any help would be apreciated :)

Dave

put the car on a steep slope facing upwards.. cap off the expansion tank... run the engine at idle speed.. massage all the hoses by hand to purge out trapped air..

although it should self bleed to be honest

haha yea the heater started working again :) thanks for advice tho :p i think thers still sum trapped air still in ther cos ive got about a litre still to go in

Dave

Don't trust the haynes volume for the coolant system, I always found they overestimate.

when you say you still have a litre to go in, have you drained the system out?

if you have it helps to remove the temp sender then fill slowly as it allows the air to work its way out faster, refit sender when coolant is coming out (all with enging off i should ad!!)

if you have drained it using the drain plug on the lower hose you should get around 3.5 ltrs back in as the engine block stays full (used to be a drain for the block but no longer there on mpi)

failing that give it around 3000 rpms for a min or so that should push the air out

well there was no drain on the actual radiator so took the bottom hose off and refilled put about 4.5 litres back in and it doesnt seem like itll take more so it must be full :) still gunna keep 1.5 litres of pre mixed spare in the back of my car tho :)

4.5 litres sounds about right to me - I reckon the 'approximately 6 litres' quoted must refer to a completely dry system being filled from scratch. As Jim says, it won't all come back out again easily - I was certainly surprised by how wet I got changing my water pump, thinking I'd be safe having drained everything that would come out of the bottom radiator hose :D
