Help Needed / Advise Just Fitted VRS Seats - Air Bag Connectors Don't Match

Featured Replies

Hi there, My car had the black leather interior, althought in mint condition i really wanted the VRS interior, i paid £550 for it but it was from a car only done 15k miles and looks brand new.

I fitted the seats taking off battery and everything to aviod air bag light coming on but once i disconnected the air bag bit i found the vrs seats dont match, they still have 3 pins in the connector like my old ones but its slightly different should i cut my old connectors and swap them over?? If so which wires connect with which or is there some form of wire harness or adaptor, i hope this all makes sence lol

Here are the connectors from my 2006 seats

IIRC there were problems with the airbag connectors under the front seats, I think they might have revised them as they would bring up a side airbag fault if they were moved or knocked with a Hoover for example. Your 2008 seats could be the revised connectors hence the mismatch. My 2006 Elegance went in to have them modded but I can't remember what they did.

If there was a TSB for the connectors there will also be details on how to fit the revised type.

I wouldn't attempt a DIY on them unless you are 101% confident.

your right in what you say as my air bag light come on just by putting my seat back lol. so i should change the connector in the car then not on the seats?

You need to be certain that the same airbag module is fitted to the new seats as was fitted to your old seats. This is to ensure compatibility with the controller - i.e. that when the ECU issues a 'fire' pulse to the squib, it does actually detonate!

You can check this on ETKA. You then need to verify the wiring colour code. One you have done this I would remove the connectors and solder the wires together. Use some heatshrink over the joints.

You should be able to change the connectors but as mentioned earlier unless you a qualified, I wouldn't entertain messing with SRS components.

I wouldn't cut the connector off as it will be v hard to sell your old seats on then.

whats ETKA, also the wires to the new seats are different colour to the old ones

The TSB for the problem with the old seats/connectors recommends cutting off the connectors and making the join with solder and heatshrink...

Which is fine if you are both

a/ 100% competent at soldering and

b/ have the correct tools.

If either of the above are in doubt then you would be better off buying new plugs from Skoda (I would change the car side so you have the newer revised plugs) and swapping the connectors over.

I think the pins are a different dimension on the new plugs, so you probably have to replace the pins (for which you need the crimp tool).

If you can't solder and don't have the tools for the connectors then best to get an auto-sparky to do it.
