Decisions, Decisions... Help!

Featured Replies

Well guys, it has been a wonderful 3 1/2 years with my Fabia vRs LE, but it has come to the time when it has to go...

I will be putting an order down for a new Octavia vRs diesel on tuseday but still cannot decide whether to go DSG or manual.

I would love to know your thoughts/opinions as to advantages & disadvantages to both & perhaps any other info that I need to know before buying an Octavia. Any options I just have to go for?

Thanks in advance.

Chris

Have you driven a DSG car? This should help you make up you're mind

I'm always weary about the longevity of auto boxes, although I appreciate DSG isn't a typical auto.

I tend to keep my cars for life. My last car (BMW) with an auto box started giving me issues at 6 years old / 150,000 miles.

As a result I went manual on my Octavia.

There are plenty of very happy DSG vRS owners on here...

If I was in your situation right now, it would be, in the following order:

  1. Maxidot
  2. Jumbo box
  3. Xenons
  4. Rear parking sensors
  5. Leather
  6. Heated seats

I don't know your budget obviously :p

I'd also consider MFSW, if going with DSG (I'm not getting into that discussion!), Columbus, silver roof rails if estate, sunset glass likewise, oh and not sure what situation is re airbags these days, but would put them high on the list if extras available.

HTH!

EDIT: & a spare wheel....!

Assuming OP is in the UK then Jumbo box is standard.

DSG cars come with MFSW and Maxidot so don't need to be ordered separately, if going manual, MFSW can't be ordered and Maxidot is an option

Curtain airbags are an option

Spare wheel is a must in my opinion...

Back to the original question though, take both for a test drive. I love the DSG in mine, I spend a lot of time in rush hour traffic and the car does all that pfaffing about between first and second etc for me. I can override the box should I feel the need to...

Performing a forum search reveals plenty of threads.

Here's one thats just a few down the page from this one...

Whilst there may be posts about DSG issues, this isn't the best to pint out as it mixes DSG and traditional auto in the same thread...

I think you need to drive one before you can decide. I love mine. This is the third car I've had with an auto gearbox, and I've never had an issue with any of them. My last one in a BMW did 150k miles in 8 years, and was still going strong when I sold it. I must say I prefer the feel of the DSG - it reacts much more quickly than a traditional auto.

I bought my auto for same reasons, a slow steady crawl / commute to work - and it was a treat.

However I missed the involvement of a manual and the additional control of the car it gives you.

Mine also changed down too early when decending a steep hill round the corner which meant I had to overide it each time I left the house.

My commute no longer involves the motorway so I've no need for lazy gear changing :giggle:

Thanks for all the advice guys.

I really do think it has to be DSG.... after a test drive to confirm, as I have only driven an Ibiza with DSG, but it was petrol.

MFSW would be lovely, v annoying that it is not an option on the manual. The Maxidot & MFSW are standard on the DSG?

Was not really considering the leather seats, are the standard ones horrible?

I don't have them & get on fine...it's just, given the budget & opportunity I'd go for it! Don't think you can get heated std seats either, but could be wrong?

Will def be going for heated seats & you can get them with the regular seats (just the front ones tho me thinks!).

The only thing that worries me about the regular seats is the white bits, to they dirty easily/are they easy to clean?

The Onyx seats in my Scout still look like new.

Its a strange set up as they are like a black mesh over white fabric.

I imagine they could be a pain to clean properly if you spill anything on them...

went from a fabia vRS to an Octavia vRS diesel DSG............................do not regret it one bit! (though I still have the fabia as I could not sell her).

Try it and see if it works for you. oh and heated seats is a must  best thing I added to the order and its a must if you go for full leather like I did, to which IMHO its worth the extra money.

This exact question, DSG vs manual, was essential to me when I put together my vRS and put it on order a week ago. I took the manual for a spin, and found it somewhat short of breath, in the meaning that it requires active shifting. Some might say that such is the nature of a sportscar, but I have also driven other cars from VAG with DSG and it is sublime. And, the ability to shift gears up by the steering wheel is also a little F1'ish.

All in all I went for the DSG, knowing that I probably could not go all that wrong.
