Driving home last night, felt something let go, now i've got fault code P0299, car was absolutely billowing white smoke, and the oil light came on after a few minutes accompanied by the smell of burning oil. Me and the RAC man are starting to get chummy now!

Will this be a blown turbo? Is it billowing smoke and losing oil indicative of a worse problem too? Car starts and runs ok, just no boost, losing oil though as said before.

Yes probably the turbo as if it was a boot pipe that had popped off it would have been a huge cloud of black smoke

Yeah I've had boost pipe issues since I've had it too, and its completely different this time. Should I be worried about the oil thing? Or will changing the turbo remedy this?

usually when the turbo goes the oil seal goes and pumps oil straight into the exhaust throught the turbo hence the using oil and the smoke, i would not leave it running for too long as when it runs out of oil, and it will do quite quickly the engine will sieze, new turbo will cure it

my thoughts tbh...oil seals go, oil goes all over shot, and gets burnt thus oil light coming on. Similar thing happened to me, but it was much more progressive, and long story short the wheel come off the turbo and they thought my engine was siezed (I never got an oil light and never noticed the smoke, if any) but my IC was full of oil.

Seems like turbo oil seal, what sort of mileage has it done?

I could be wrong, and I'm sure I'll get corrected if I am but oil down your exhaust from the turbo is not good for the cat either.

That said I am very envious of how deep your pockets must be if your worried about the oil and not the cost of the turbo. :giggle:

ususally the oil down the exhaust will happen quite quickly once the turbo goes so its usually not drivable, most of the time the damage is minimal, it does however take a while for the smoke to burn off after changing the turbo as the exhaust doesnt get as hot as a petrol, the petrol will clear up alot sooner, some places do take the cat + downpipe off and let it drain out for a few days, otherwise just take it for a blast at night after its all done
