First snow drive in 1.2TSI DSG

Had a nice layer of snow this morning - going from light, through to slush and up to an inch or more of fresh snow. Drove out and the car behaved very well - got to the top of a hill and had to stop, moved off and a bit of wheel spin but it found whatever grip it could and we were away, albeit slowly. A few times the wheels would spin when driving along but overall I'm very impressed.

For all the comments about the DSG going up the gears quickly (30mph for 7th etc) it worked well with it going from 1st to 2nd quickly, and being able to creep along was great.

Take it easy, no sharp movements and you'll be fine. If this slush freezes and turn to ice then that will be a different story but what car would be able to get raction on sheet ice? Unless you have studded tyres that is!

How about coming slowly downhill? Do you have to dab on the brakes to counter automatic changing up?

Oh, that shows how much I know! I didn't think you could manually change gears on the 1.2tsi dsg. I thought only the VRS could do that.

Yes, you have manual mode on all DSG's, you just don't have the paddles. When in manual, push the stick forward to change up and back to change down. It may even be better using manual all the time in the snow so that you can hold a gear whenever you need to.

I think where I misunderstood was when I read about automatic changing up, even in manual mode here.

It will still change up automatically if you get the revs up to the upchange point, so you will need to select the right gear and control with braking so the revs don't go too high.

Downhill was fine - if you use no gas it tends to stick to about 2nd gear, maybe 3rd on a big hill. If you press the gas of course it will go up the gears but it seems to know you are going downhill and don't want to go faster if you don't press the gas. It's a bit like using the cruise when going downhill - the car won't physically brake to slow you down but it will change down a gear or two and it does its best to maintain the set speed downhill. This is in auto mode on the DSG.

In manual mode, as said above, it will hold the gears longer but at some point it will change up to prevent you red-lining the engine for a long period of time.

I guess it can recognise this from the gas demand and the engine revs. Maybe this was not programmed into the older dsg box in the Audi (link posted earlier). That sort of spooked me a bit!

Glad you like the car. They are really good in the snow and ice. I've found my estate to be superb...errr, no not a Skoda Superb! Mines a diesel so I have just a little more weight over my drive wheels which is brilliant. Last winter I was able to traverse snow and ice laden hills and roads that some others just couldn't tackle, and my ABS proved invaluable at times making it just that bit easier to maintain control without having to try too hard.
