Engine undertray - replacement needed

Recommended Posts

With all the snow and ice, I seem to have broken the plastic engine 'undertray', which covers the sump.

it is split down the middle and hanging loose.

Anybody know how much they might be, best place to purchase and will it do any damage to drive it without one for a while?

My car is a 2004 1.9 Diesel.

thanks

its only there for sound proofing makes no difference to how the car drives if the sound does not bother you leave it as it is.makes it easy to change the oil.bill

The engine oil will be seriously overcooled in Winter conditions if the undertray is damaged or left off.

This will lower fuel economy and increase warmup time, leading to more engine wear. The tray also lowers drag at speed - further improving economy.

The thing is a complete pain, but VAG put it there for a good reason. It's such a pity that they could not design it with a micron of intelligence - using all the same fastener types and fitting a flap hatch for the engine oil drain would have been a good start.

Hmm that may explain a few things then. My car does seem to take ages to warm up. Although ive never had engine under tray fitted TBH.

I can advise from experience that both the front and rear undertrays are around £250 inc VAT from your local VAG stealer.................. :S

As stated by rotodiesel, the undertray has a fair few purposes and I wouldn't run any motor without one if it came with one from the factory..............

Thanks for the advice.

Given the sub zero temperatures and my need to keep the car running, I got the tray replaced at a local garage.

Can thoroughly recommend Brookroyd garage at Killinghall, near Harrogate.

(A specialist Skoda garage, without the main dealer prices)

Once Skoda delivered the right tray I got it fitted with full set of replacement clips for £135, including a car wash.

Even got an Octavia vRS to go to/from work in for the day.

Car is quieter already and hope to get back into the 50+ mpg, rather than 45ish.

Good price that, they can keep the car wash though............. :giggle:
