Hi - does it cut out cleanly as if the ignition's been turned off, or does it splutter and die?

When restarting do you have to use the immobiliser key again? When it refuses to restart does anything else in the car still work?

(I recently had a similar issue - it cut out a couple of times when accelerating after a left-hand turn into a junction - turned out to be loose battery terminals. What alerted me to it being electrical was that when it cut out the last time, the hazard lights didn't work.)

hi,

thank you for the interest, but i found out earlier this morning what was wrong with it, the rotor arm kept coming lose and riding up the shaft!

thank you anyway :)

Was about to mention the distributor. Check for free-play in the distributor shaft by gently rotating the rotor arm left to right, there should be only very slight movement. If there's very noticeable movement I'd look to get hold of a spare good distributor and an appropriately sized o ring to fit between the extension tube and distributor. I had intermittent problems due to this which were solved by replacing the distributor.
