Squeak from rear wheel and burning smell

Featured Replies

Rear wheel started to squeak yesterday after driving for about 15 mins and also has a bit of a burning smell from that wheel. Always start squeaking now after about 15 mins of driving.

Any ideas. At first i though bearing, but the burning smell suggests something's up with the caliper.

I already get very loud squeaking when reversing which was happy to live with, although it is annoying, and now this.

Sounds like a stuck brake. Put your hand near the wheel after a 15 minute drive (DON'T TOUCH IT!!). If you can feel heat then the brake is stuck on.

What could be happening is that the rear pad friction material has come unattached from the brake pad metal base . This happened to me and i would always get a squealling sound almost constant noise after driving some time at low speed.

I got some replacement pads (mintex) and when removing the caplier, the old frictional material fell out.

Worth checking.

I still get the dreaded reversing moaning, which is dam annoying and have given up trying to fix that one. May try another rear pad when the current ones wear again.

Mark.

Burning smell is something mine does and always has

Don't know why though. I assume its the exhaust hanger

Thanks for the replies.

I reckon it's the caliper sticking, but have booked it with the local VW indie tomorrow to have a look, as i have no chance of working on the car in these conditions. Our road is still full of snow and ice. Will post an update once the matter is diagnosed and resolved. It does seem to be getting very hot that side of the car and if it is sticking i'd rather get it sorted quickly without doing too much more driving.

Gonna get the lower breather pipe put on at the same time as the old one snapped when fitting a new upper breather pipe. I was farting about for far too long in -3 conditions trying to get the old lower pipe off without breaking anything else :S Some jobs just don't suit a basic DIYer like me.

I'm now a few hundred quid poorer, but hopefully the problem is resolved. New brake cable (which was damaged), and new rear pads (Pagid's).

They were not 100% it would fix the issue, but as the cable was damaged it was the easier and cheaper thing to fix first, before looking at replacing the caliper. As pads were already half worn and a cheaper make, i thought i may as well get the pads swapped out at the same time.

lower breather pipe replacement was the dearest item to replace of all at 2 hours labour. :' Steep, but TBH it would have been such a PITA to do myself in the current wintry conditions and probably would have ended up breaking something else in the process.

Rear caliper mooing was fixed with a mod under warranty on my car:

Don't know if that mod, or any of the other advice in the thread is of any relevance to your Octy, but can't hurt to check it out...

Jesus, I called Skoda today to order that rear caliper service kit, £104, I nearly fell of the chair. How can that price be justifed. Also rear wheel arch liner at £90 what is going on...

Kept me money and it can wait, I will put up with the mooing for a little longer..

Mooing when reversing has gone. Not sure why, but the obvious change that would have caused this was swapping out the rear pads.

Could be fine from now on - FWIW, my calipers DIDN'T moo when I first got the car, but did when I had the original discs and pads replaced with Mintex / ZeroSixty ones. Go figure... :o
