Privacy Glass - how do I know I have it!?!

Featured Replies

I ordered my Superb v6 with 'privacy glass', but am not sure if it has been fittted or not. The rear side windows and rear screen are a TINY bit darker than the front windows, but its hardly noticable - and certainly does not give any 'privacy'!. On my last car, you could definately see a difference. You had to cup your hands against the glass to see into the back of the car, and naively that's what I thought I was ordering on the Superb...

Has anyone go privacy glass fitted? Can you take a photo so I can see how dark your windows look? Or is there some other way to tell?

Thanks

There is no 'privacy glass' available from the factory, it's called 'sunset glass' and as you have found out it's tint is about twice that of the front windows, so not a lot but noticeable, the only problem with photo's is sometimes it appears darker than it actually is.

Here is a good example of how dark it is (or isn't)

I thought the sunset was too light as well but also went for the extra security of having the windows limo tinted

There is a very easy way to tell. On each glass there is a small amount of marking on the bottom right hand corner. Part of this will be am AS rating. If it shows AS2 this is what you will find on all legal driver and passenger doors and rear with no extra tint. If it shows AS3 then this will be darker and would not be legal for glass forward of the B piller. This however is nit limo tint it is just a darker shade.

Privacy glass (limo tint) in criminals eyes, especially on an estate says "I've got something to hide" and could possibly increase the risk of your car being broken into. I would rather there be some visibility of there being nothing worth stealing than totally hide the rear interior.

Estate cars tend to be used by people that lug big expensive kit around (eg. IT equipment engineer) as they need the extra load carrying capacity.

Sunset has it right in my eyes, it does provide a level of tint whilst retaining a discrete appearence.

This is exactly my point above, because the picture has been taken at an angle it looks almost like limo tint, what you need is a bit of daylight showing to show the real tint level - like at the rear where you can see the tailgate glass (don't forget when it is against another piece of tinted glass it will appear darker again)

If you have the tint applied properly it makes the glass very hard to break after having 2 cars broken into by having the rear and side windows smashed I went to this option as the film is also security film.

When I was getting insurance quotes one broker asked if the windows were tinted more than 30%, when I replied that I was not sure of the % they quoted me for both - the difference was HUGE!

The glass is just the same to break, all the tint does it keep it in one convienient chunk for the thief to remove. Whilst you cannot push the glass in as it retains some rigidity, that ridgity is only in one direction, it is quiet easy to remove even security film covered glass you just dont get the messy glass bits inside the car.

Any tint applied to the front side windows in the superb here in the UK will mean your front side windows are illegal as the factory tint is already at the maximum allowed by law.

Hi I have had my windows tinted B pillar back on all my cars for about the last 10 years

the only time i have ever had a car broken in to was when my A6 was at the dealers for some warranty work and the hire car another A6 was broken in to outside Playgolf in manchester and my laptop was stolen it was in the boot but i reckoned they watched me get my clubs out of car saw laptop and poped rear side widow and pulled back roll cover (it was an avant version) it didnt have privacy glass !

the best bit was trying to explain to my boss why I was at a golf driving range at 3pm on a thursday afternoon oopppss

bizzarly if you have film and you point a black and white security camera with infared lights at it then they see straight through the film and glass !
