Replaced front dampers - change in ride heigth

Featured Replies

Hi,

I did a front damper replacement for a few days ago. I have noticed that the front axles ride heigth has increased with some centimeters. How could this be?

Could I have got the wrong dampers? It sems to me that there are only two kind of dampers for these cars, With and without ABS or else its the same part no`s listed for all felicias.

The old ones had a sticker with part no:

And the new ones has part no:

Does any one of you know what the part no for the orginal dampers are for a felicia pick up -97 with 1.9D engine and without ABS?

Thanks for any advise :)

I see what you mean. Dampers do not control ride height though. They just control the acceleration of the wheels over bumps and potholes, and how long it takes the wheels to return to theit "rest position".

Did you change the inserts (requires dismantling the struts, removing the damper cartridge insert and reassembling) or buy complete struts with new springs?

first off double check that the damper is fully seated in the hub, the skoda faverit front strut casings have the spring platform welded higher up so maybe that, can you measure the distance from the bottom o9f the casing to the spring seat, it should be around 230mm or so

Hi,

Thanks for answers. I have done som checking. The struts are fully seated in the hub. I measured the from the bottom of the casing to the spring seat. The old ones are approx 230mm and the new ones are 265mm. So, it seem that I have got the wrong dampers. Could these be for a Favorit?

The bad thing is that I bougth these on Ebay from Germany. Have to contact the seller to se if we can sort this out.

One solution may be to chop the springs one turn :)

If I'm following what you're saying correctly, the lower spring pans are at least an inch too high on the struts. If you've got the old struts, measure from where the spring pan meets the tube down to where it meeds the stub axle to confirm this. I fully expect it will measure out 25mm longer on the new units.

I'm not sure how Norwegian consumer law works on this one, but EU law (generalisation) normally requires that goods be "as described and fit for purpose", and spring pans an inch too high certainly fail on one or both counts, so you should be entitled to replacements, with the suppplier liable for "reasonable costs of carriage" both ways.

Don't just take a hacksaw to the springs though, because that will mess up the spring poundage. (how much force it takes to compress or extend the spring a given distance)

Hi,

As far as I have understood, its the same part no on the front damper for the entire Felicia range expept from the difference with and without ABS? Same front damper for pick up and kombi and estate?

Indeed. Skoda themselves list several different part numbers depending on the engine and body style, but nearly all replacement manufacturers offer a single part to cover the whole specification range (e.g. Sachs 200 638/Boge 27-C19-0). As far as I'm aware the only difference of ABS dampers is that they have an extra hole for the retaining clip that holds the speed sensor wire.

I'd agree; you need mounts for wiring clip(s) and/or sensor stators, but ABS doesn't need a different side height or damper rates.

I am giving this thing up. ATP claims that the dampers I have recieved is for a Felicia 1 and 2 both kombi and estate as listet, but not far a pick up. The listening didn`t include pickup, so they isnt for my car they say. I am 100% sure they have sent med Favorit/Foreman dampers.

Whatever... I have ordered a new set of dampers from my local part-pusher. If someone want cheap Foreman/Favorit dampers, please let me know :)

Can't find ATP online anywhere, but Monroe and KYB list the same damper for all Felicia models. In fact I can tell you from experience that the only difference between Felicia/ABS and Felicia/non-ABS (and Favorit) dampers is a little welded bracket to support the ABS sensor wire. KYB only sells the with-ABS type, which fits perfectly well on non-ABS vehicles.

I know. This is my conclusion to. I don`t know what ATP are messing around with. I have given them up and have to look for other ways to get rid of my ATP dampers. I picked up two monroe front dampers today at my lokal part-pusher. The dealer claimed that these should fit all felicias. These measure 235mm from the bottom and up to the spring pan. I will have them fitted this weekend I think.

Favorit dampers are useful if fitting bigger wheels/tyres to raise the gearing. I used this setup for awhile on my pickup, with favorit springs the rideheight is the same.
