This had to happen while I was in Nottingham . . .

Featured Replies

Was driving along through Nottingham (by the Ferrari garage) and I suddenly heard a bang as I did up my window. Voilà, the window stopped doing up. So at college the next day I stripped the door card off expecting the motor to have blown up or something. After taking the motor off the thick metal cAble (abit like a bike brake line) had come off whatever it was on. Can anyone tell me were it went? Even better does anyone wanna fix it for some beer money? Could also meet anyone who lives between Nottingham and London off the m1 on Friday :)

thanks chaps

It goes back onto the door :giggle:

I had the same thing happen on my old Polo.

The carrier is made of a crappy plastic and wears over time.

I paid about £55 from VW for a new set of runners, which included the carriers. I simply swapped over the motor and bolted the new runners in.

Not sure how easy that will be on a fabia though.

Lol Tim I know . . . But I have no idea how . . .

Cba to buy parts like that. If you can get it back on that is what I am after. Does it just wrap around the plastic round thing? (A* explination)

door card etc is already off!

Thanks for the quick replies

Have a look at the videos below.

It will be pretty similar to the Fabia

mate did you have to take the metal on the inside of the door out? It hides all the window runners etc? That was my main issue. I didn't wanna start drilling rivets out when I had none to use again. And I wasn't 100% sure I would need to or not

It was a 6k Polo, so behind the doorcard, it wasn't metal like the fabia. it was just a sheet of plastic.

You'll need to take the metal out to get to the regulator though.

The videos I posted above should help explain it in a lot more detail.

Yeah, Metal comes out I'm afraid.. this happened one mine.. The cable got all wrapped up wrong and jammed..

It's actually a straight forward repair but most consumer rivet tools won't do anything big enough to re-build it all once you've drilled it out.

I ended up stripping the door, drilling the rivets, fitting the new carrier and then securing it with gaffa tape (it has 2 locating pins to stop it moving about).. and drove down to the local dealer to have them rivet it back in.. then drove home and re fitted all the trim.

The metal panel with carrier can be had for around £60 from TPS, I think? It's about 75ish from Skoda them selves. I got charged £25 for the labor when they riveted it back together.. which, I've got to be honest, hacked me off a bit because that was there minimum charge (15minutes),, takes the mic, seeing as it was simply replacing 10 rivets.. aye well.. They didn't have to re-fit a single thing as it was all in place! Grrrr

some people suggest using large self tappers... but I just don;t think it's a good idea to start breaking the paint finish and galveniseation on the inside of what has proven to be a very leaky door design.. I can see all the lugs giving up and the carrier just falling off in 10 years or so, hehe!

Softscoop I can't see the video mate I am stuck on my phone :(

thanks alot for the reply rob. What part is the carrier? Because the wire looks as if it's come off the round plastic wheel underneath the motor.

If this is wrong where does that wire go?

Ta

I'm not completely sure but I think the carrier is the metal panel and it comes with the window mechanism attached as a single part? Mine did.

When i took my motor off I could see the mangled cable across the hole where the motor locates into the winder... sounds like yours has done the same, it is not repairable i'm afraid, or at least mine wasn't as it got well a truly jammed. you'll need a new mechanism / carrier i'm suspect.

Yup, same as what happened to my Polo, except the regulator was bolted to the door, not the metal door cariier.
