Unsure about flywheel conversion!

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I have an 04 plate VRS that has covered 76k. Remapped (unsure of power figures roughly 180bhp? crazy torque) and the clutch has just started slipping. I purchased a Single mass conversion secondhand from ebay a little while back with the intention of using the flywheel and purchasing my own clutch to fit. After enquiring at jabbasport the £675 price tag has rather put me off the Sachs uprated clutch kit! I spoke to Euro car Parts today and they are suppying me with a standard Sachs clutch kit including dual mass flywheel for £250 (trade I think), which is more like it :).

I am hoping the clutch kit will fit my single mass flywheel, that is providing I dare put it on :p . I have heard so many stories about the lightweight single mass flywheels (vibration, driveability etc.) along with a youtube video of the noise on tickover:

I'm sure I could deal with the noise but smashing my ridiculously expensive 6 speed box or diff to pieces is a different story!

Has anybody on here had any personal experience with a SMF? Any information or experiences would be most appreciated; no bullsh*t scare stories though please! :giggle:

Many thanks!

Chris

FYI:

Flywheel info (I will have standard clutch kit I know, all I can afford at the mo!)

I`m 99% sure the standard clutch wont fit a smf.

But as far as they go, wicked bit of kit, adds nothing on paper, power wise etc, but changes the drive totally. Feels like it rev`s so much more freely, gives the "race car" feel when you drive it, tis bit hardcore tho. As long as you can put up with the noise its all good. Although if i were only running a map, i`m not sure i`d bother.

I've got the SMF Jabbasport 6.5kg flywheels and Sachs sports clutch kit - no gearbox problems - use the torque, revs quicker - rattle isnt there when you are moving!

Thanks for the responses.

It fitted, only difference was the size of the pressure plate bolts, so i had to slightly enlarge the holes on the plate very slightly.

I have only driven about 2 miles so far and unfortunately the roads are icy. I'm going to bed it in then see what it's like. The noise is fairly brutal! Only because I know it is the gearbox though.

How long/ how many miles since you had yours fitted?

Thanks

Mine also has an SMF and I find it to be fine to drive with except when the gear changes become a bit stiff at low revs round town. The noise does my head in and I don't think I would have fitted it myself but the previous owner put it in as a Hybrid turbo was planned. I could take it or leave it TBH.

Ive got the jabba single mass flywheel kit with sach clutch, apart from the noise which doesnt bother me tbh its awsome its so much lighter as said above so the engine revs quicker, which will increas acceleration slightly, its transforms the car to drive makes it much more fun and "race like" like matt said but depends what sort of power your looking to go for? with the smf you could run more torque with out the flywheel f'ing itself over about 20-30,000 miles
