rad fans cut in after ignition off

Featured Replies

Hi all

had a flat battery twice this week, jumped off and all fine untl it happened again, then i noticed whilst jumping it that both the fans where on without the ignition on,so im guessing thats whats done the battery in!

only way ive managed to stop this happening again is by removing the 80A fuse from near the battery

any body any idea what causes this and is it expensive to put right and is it easy to do?

thanks for any help and advice

by the way cars a 1.9tdi on a 56 plate

just a thought but could be a relay, dont know which one tho.

What causes it? Heat.

The fans on my TDI vRS will come on after I turn the ignition off from time to time. It's a safety feature to ensure that the engine does not overheat after it's stopped (engines heat up for a while after you turn them off). The fans will stay on for 3-5 minutes then when the temperature has stabilised they turn off automatically. Both my previous Land Rover diesels had the same arrangement and I've seen it in vehicles back to the 1980's.

If your fans are coming on when the vehicle is cold then I would say a temperature sensor somewhere is faulty.

Or your rad needs some coolant
