Looking to buy a Fabia I

Featured Replies

Hello,

I am looking to buy a fabia, i am wanting to find a 1.4 16v with 100bhp (same engine as the polo and lupo sports)

What model/year should i be looking for? i'm not sure if all of them are 100bhp, i know there was also lower trim models that were only 75bhp?

Chris

Noooo! But seriously, they are known for having piston ring issues in the earlier engines (AUB code and A** which I can't remember). There is a revised version from about 2004 onwards, which I believe fixes the issue.

The 75bhp version was used firstly in the automatics, and later on instead of the 100bhp version I believe towards the end of the Fabias life.

really? i've never heard of that one (coming from polos previously).

That said, the AUB lump is potentially not going to stay, as i have an AFH lump from a polo that will run in the region of 170bhp when i finish it.

SO essentially i need to look for a 1.4 16v around an 04 plate, which is going to be one of the higher models like an elegance or did they actually do a fabia sport?

Cheers!

There is a Fabia Sport, but that the 75bhp version

Avoid early 100 1.4's.. I also know the sadness of a sickerly 1.4. I had it for 2 years and it was nothing but trouble.. that said, my piston rings never went but when I bought it the garage said they'd just been done.. it just seemed to find a new reason not to work well every other month.

Easily the most unreliable Fabias. Any other engine will leave you much happier... with the 1.9 sdi being bullet proof.

If you've got an engine swap planned though... go for it.

i've got a 2001 elagance, 100hp, no probs engine wise so far, just few electrical woes...

But when i did buy it, the guy said the belt snapped around the 75k mark (don't really know history so who knows why) and since then it's sounding like a diesel, but still feels and pulls well!!

If going for an engine swap, it doesnt really matter about the engine troubles of the earlier fabias

Ace. I am essentially looking for a 100bhp one that i can potentially transplant the AFH into or build another to suit. It's got be a non sunroof model and in a solid colour (pref white).

This is going to be the basic car i am going to build to do the MSA 1400 rally championship with. I have a half built tarmac polo that i will be continuing to use as well, but the fabia makes more sense for going in the woods hopefully (as i am wanting to keep the polo in the best condition possible, as it was my first car).

My dad luckily works for a skoda main dealer in sales so will be getting him on the hunt.

thanks for the info so far!

Interesting topic. As I understand you, engine spec doesn't really matter as you will be modifying it.

So why look out for a 100bhp model? Well: they're cheap, and they've got disc breaks on the rear, which probably makes for a good donor.

It may come with ASR but I don't know if this will survive an engine transplant, and you're probably better off without it.

It may have AC / elec windows / mirrors / remote locking, probably not wanted on a rally car though.

I think all models had ABS (?)

Parkers website is pretty good for comparing model year / spec variants.

Not sure why you're looking for an elegance? Can you provide your ideal list of features?

I would go for the Elegance model with heated seats :)

I'm really not too bothered at all by the spec, aslong as it's the 100bhp model (as i could run with this engine for a period of time if required) with the disc braked axel (as it saves me lots of hassle converting so i can run a lethal hydraulic handbrake) the majority of the interior would be sold/recycled.

To be honest anything like ABS/ASR will be removed, electric windows may stay as they're quite handy for time controls so i can wind the window down from the drivers side for the co-driver. Having said that, i'd bin everything else to save weight.

I'm hoping this should be a good starting point for a rally car, due to the shared platform with the rest of the VAG family (might even find some ibiza kit car parts or some S1600 polo bits).

Cheers

Yeah, those forest stages don't half get cold? hehe!
