But with the car on the lift I also discovered that I need new rear dampers, a new brake pipe and a new shaft seal where the gearshift rod enters the gearbox...

I've settled an appointment with my garage in January - the owner will need a bit of cash to pay for his Xmas trip to Dubai :p

rear dampers aren't the end of the world, they are only about £35 each genuine from the skoda dealer..

nearly all of them leak from the gear linkage seal, there should also be a rubber boot on there too which often gets left off after a clutch change, fortunately it's a fairly simple job to change it, just knock the roll pin out the gear linage and seperate it from the selector shaft and slap the new seal in, if you are quick you wont loose any oil from the gearbox (if any)...

you dont say which brake pipe needs changing, but again it's a fairly simple job to change them, although to replace the ones that go from the master cylinder to the rear axle you need to drop the subframe to get decent access.. pre-forned brake pipes for a felicia from the skoda dealer which come pre-bent to shape with the flares/nuts fitted are about £10 each

If you have lots of play in the gearstick it's also a good time to replace the appropriate parts of the linkage.
