What gearboxs fit a mk1 vRS?

Featured Replies

Hi

My clutch is ready for replacement, and my 1st gear has been whining for the last 20,000 miles. So im looking around for a gearbox, I figure I may aswell have it replaced while the clutch is done if ecenomic to do so....

The transmission code on the label in the boot is EHA, however looking arround on Ebay I cant find many/if any available. Are there any other golf/A3/leon varient gearboxes that fit the Mk1 vRS? 5 speed or 6 Speed?

Many thanks

and Merry Christmas.

Not 100% sure but a few months back i had to change my gearbox, a mate of mine who owns a garage changed it for me but also said that the Octavia will only work properly with EHA gearbox, he mentioned that the speedo may give a false reading and that the mpg will drop if using a different code gearbox, took me four weeks to find a second hand box, ended up finding it on eBay.

Hope this helps

Hi,

Any 02J petrol 5 speed from an Audi A3 (non - quottro), Seat Leon, VW Golf or Bora will fit without too much fuss. ****** about speedo reading, mine's spot on with the 6 speed!! The only way it'll effect mpg is if it's too lower geared.... But the petrol 02J's are all the same final drive.

cheers

Hi sorry to hijac but I cant find the guide for the 6 speed conversion, iirc someone did a nice write up of them putting a 6 speed box in the vRS, it was silver iirc?

what is needed to do this as from what I gather the 6 speed boxes are much stronger than the 5's in the vRS?

cheers

billy

drive shafts

flywheel and clutch

starter motor

selector and cables

not worth the money unless running big power then its meant to be good

second hand 02j boxes are going for £100 these days

I did a guide..... Will find a link to it! Regarding the parts it's like Clive said with the addition of the modification to the clutch hydraulic line.... Oh and the 02m specific mounting bracket.

The gear selector cables can be retained as long as you have the correct cable support guide on the top of the gearbox casing - nothing gearstick end needs changing.

It's a massive job and if you're running less than 330bhp I really wouldn't bother! 02m (petrol) is too shorter geared IMO, and the 02m (diesel) needs some serious poke to make it work well!

In gear speeds are approx @ 7k limit:

02M (petrol)

1st - 32 mph

2nd - 56 mph

3rd - 87 mph

4th - 112 mph

5th - 138 mph

6th - 162 mph

02m (diesel)

1st - 55 mph

2nd - 88 mph

3rd - 125 mph

4th - 155 mph

5th - 180 mph

6th - 180+ mph

The 02m diesel box is kind of similar to the 02j...... Gears 1-5 are similar geared just approx 15mph faster in gear, and the extra gear (6th) is an ultra smooth (very) high speed cruising gear!!
