engine bay cleaning advice

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Just wondered how easy to clean the engine bay...

what electrical bits need or should be covered?? (Battery , alterator etc)

Can this be done with light pressure from a jet wash B)

Any help appreciated

regards P

I’d advise against using a jet wash, the spray has a habit of finding it into all the wrong places.

I recon the time it’ll take to protect all the electrical bits properly, you could have done it by hand. Plus, it’ll give you chance to look for any split hoses/loose connections while you’re at it.

I’d do it by hand with an old (clean) paintbrush and some diluted degreasing solution and be careful around any electrical connections (shove an asda bag over the alternator).

I know people who use a pressure washer for this, but don't think I'd be happy doing that! I've used a steam cleaner with excellent results. You can use foil to wrap all the electrics, as it molds around things really well. There is a cleaning kit you can get from Halfords- made by Turtle Wax IIRC. It has two cans- degreaser and dressing/laquer. This is a really, really good product - really easy to use and lasts ages!

I washed my engine just pulverizing some Nigrin engine washer and water(no pressure),no cloth,no brush....nothing

I just cleaned mine by hand with a bucket of water and rags  and also used some back to black on the plastic bits

I personally would not use a pressure washer as to be honest there is not much engine area to clean.

You can get good results just using some alloy polish like autosol, plastic trim restorer / and general engine cleaner like autoglym or meguirs clean machine

That is what I did with mine
