Engine cut out issue

Featured Replies

New user here....be gentle.

Currently driving Octavia Elegance 2.0PD ('06 plate).

Driven for over two incident free years now. Best car I've ever had.

Tonight on the way home from work the engine simply cut out on me on three occasions over a time period of around 10 minutes.

First, I'd just come off the M60 onto a main "A" road and the engine simply cut out. All lights, windows, heater, radio were still working fine, but no warning lights on dash display. Turned the ignition key off and then on again..nothing. No dash warning lights & no turn over. Removed the key and tried again...same again, nothing. Waited around 30 seconds and tried again and it came back to life.

Secondly, only driven about 50 yards then same happened again, then again a third time shortly after.

A 30 second wait seemed to clear the fault, but my major concern is if the engine had simply cut out whilst on the motorway...evening rush, very busy and to suddenly lose the engine power would be a major headache, not to say potentially dangerous for me and other road users around me.

This cut out happened firstly whilst the engine was being revved and driven in third gear. Secondly it cut out whilst changing gear ( so clutch depressed) and thirdly it cut out whilst in neutral and idling in traffic queue, so It's really difficult to pinpoint the cause.

My initial thought are an electrical fault, possibly linked to an immobiliser issue......???

Guys, over to you...answers on a postcard......any suggestions?

Have you had the fuel filter changed ??? how cold was it when it happened, as the fuel could have waxed up

Yes, fuel filter changed last service (6 to 8 months ago), and engine had just had a 40 minute motorway run so was warm.

I'm going to check oil, as possibly there may be a low oil safety cut out and the low oil warning light / sensor may be faulty.

Not sure if this model has safety cut out for this though.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

sorry to hear of yours woes, but if it helps, I've have a similar problem with my 2.0PD.

I had numerous breakdowns just over a year ago, each AA patrol man had a different theory, no codes were logged for a while and only

sheer determination (on my part) saw it finally fixed.

Does the car stutter at all before cutting out ?

No, it didn't appear to. Just cut out.....once whilst idling at the lights...no stutter at all.

Just wondered as mine used to stutter before cutting out, finally tracked down to a faulty crankshaft sensor.

Have you had it into a sepcialist or dealer for diagnostics.

That's next on the list.....I've contacted Parkside in Bolton (very good service there)....will have to pop it in over the Christmas Hols if possible.

Have just checked oil level....it's fine.

I'd a similar occurence due to an alleged misfuelling incident.
