As above will coilovers fitted to a MK5 Golf GTI fit an Octavia RS or are they a different fitting?

They will fit physically , just iirc the axle loading is different , so the spring and damper rates wont work as well

Yes, the GTI V and Octavia RS have the same coilover fittings. In fact the Golf 3.2 also uses the same suspension rates. The only thing you need to watch out for is variation on the strut diameter (50 or 55mm) which is an issue on the A5 chassis.

Might sound a stupid question, but how do I find out which is the correct strut diameter for my car?

Measure it?

Majority are 55mm though so I'm lead to believe.
