Declaration of BHP on modified insurance policy.

Featured Replies

I was just thinking the other day....

My policy is currently under the declaration of my car running 181BHP. However I suspect that it will not be running that power at current as boost was dialled down to keep the turbo in good condition. I know it can be run at that but as my insurance is due for renewal in Jan I might get an RR to check how much lower it is running as there seems to be a percentage relationship between BHP increase over satndard and increase in premium over standard. Might save myself some money. However, I also started wondering how insaurance companies can be sure what power a modified car is actually running? For instance, you could have a remap to 170bhp or it could be 190-200bhp. There would be a difference in premium between these two possibilities but while in the event of a crash they will be able to tell if the car had been remapped, how can they tell what power the car is putting out? I'm not looking to get round my insurance premium but it just seemed quite a thought that you could declare you had a remap running 165 and it was in fact 190.

Any thoughts?

I doubt they will lower it for the chance you have turned it down a bit. I declared 300 on mine, and probably if ever I get there, I don't think Flux will be too concerned if it happens to dyno 301bhp..... I would imagine in your case the fact it is remapped, or not, is what would affect the premium.

Most companies I've had quotes from band the remap - so 0-10% increase, 11-20% increase, 21%+ increase etc.

Mine made 190bhp the other day, and is currently rocking 27bhp, might ring them up to see if I can get a discount!

All kidding aside, it raises a good point.

Generally any highly modded (bigger turbo etc) will have a power figure. The ones below this, that might just have a remap etc, it wont be running 190bhp+

Sure sure, I'm not that bothered about it myself, just thought it would be interesting to know how they deal with the situation.

I agree, perhaps post this for a insurance firm on here to answer?

tbh theres no way they will be able to tell....

yes they can tell if you have a remap but unless your written off car is able to run on a rolling road (which is unlikely) theres no real way they would ever know

tbh i'd tell them it was 160bhp as a pd130 turbo wont make much more than that anyway...
