help salt corrosion

Recommended Posts

Noticed today that the salt has started gettin at my alloy wheels, is there a easy way to stop this or is it a retreat for the wheels ????

First off get your wheels clean to remove any muck that is currently on them. There are many wheel cleaning products on the market, personally I use Bilberry but its down to individual preference. You might find that after a good clean your wheels are not in such as bad a state as you originally feared.

Next treat your wheels with a good quality sealant or wax. This will ensure that any future road salt will stick to the sealant/wax rather than the wheel itself.

If after that you are still not happy with the condition of your alloys then i guess the next route would be to find a local specialist that do alloy wheel refurbs. They vary in price and the length of time it takes them to do the job. Some places will need a couple of days while others will travel out to you and do the job "on-site".

Personally I would wait until the spring/summer before thinking about having them refurbed as the weather is not going to get any better any time soon and minimising any exisiting damage to your wheels now will mean they wont get any worse.

Hope this helps.

Looks like I better get busy tomoz then n give a good going over. Fingers crossed they not too bad.

If you get time take some pictures too and post them here.

There are lots of people on here who are bordering on fanatical when it comes to car detailing and so will be very well placed to give you their best advice based on your wheels current condition

EDIT: I misread your car as being a Scout, sorry, this post doesn't apply...

Incidentally, the alloys on the Scout are notorious for delaminating, so it may not be purely the salt to blame.

Take a look at this thread; there are some pictures on it of the various different stages of delamination experienced by several owners including me.

Skoda UK is aware of the problem and will occasionally replace wheels under warranty...
