Towbar wiring.

Featured Replies

Hi

I have just purchased a 06 Superb 1.9tdi 130 Exclusive and I am in the process of fitting a towbar. I got a nice swan neck Bossal tow bar but I am getting conflicting opinions regarding the electrics.Do I need a bypass relay for this car or will the standard wiring loom work ie. One Skoda dealer said I need a relay while another said I dont.

Is this model superb fitted with a multiplex wiring system for the rear lights ? If I can get an answer to this I know which type to use.

On another point, the car is listed as an "exclusive" model but its very difficult to find any info about this spec. Where about in the range is this spec ?

Thanks

The lighting wiring on the Mk1 Superb is absolutely straightforward and wiring a towbar is dead easy.

VAG brake lamp switches are crappy and my big trailer has 4 stoplamps, so I fitted a relay in the brake lamp circuit to feed the trailer socket. You can get a power feed for the trailer stoplamps from the back of the 12V socket in the boot - via a 10A line fuse.

Whilst you're in there, wire up the LH foglamp. Everything is there - you just need a wire link to the LH lamp.

I tow several times a week with my Superb and have had no problems.

Like Roto I use my Superb for towing and didnt use a bypass relay, the relay for the brake lights is on my todo list. I think the "Exclusive" may have been an Irish only spec but could be wrong, I remember coming across a few when searching for a 130AWX and seem to remember they were lower spec than the Elegance..

BTW how do I get the indicator light in the dash to work?

Don't bother with an indicator light - fit a buzzer in the boot.

This meets current regulations and is a lot less trouble. The OE wiring works on a wing and a prayer on VAG vehicles - disturb it at your peril.

Thats why I didnt bother, yes the buzzer meets the (EU?)regs here too.

Thanks lads for the info

I fitted a new bossal swan neck towbar this morning and wired the 7 pin plug without the relay. Not a diffucult job. When I plugged in the trailer the brake bulb blown light appeared on the dash when I pressed the brake. The ecu thinks I have a bulb blown. I checked all the wiring on the trailer and checked the bulbs on the car just to be sure but no problems.

I must have a small earth problem on the trailer or the LED lights on the trailer are causing the problem. The warning lights does not appear when the trailer is disconnected.

I have access to a VAG COM kit so I disabled the blub failure warning. This can be done in the 17 instruments, coding section.

Problem solved.
