£15 a litre for gearbox oil

Featured Replies

At my local Skoda & VW dealer

Nearly fell off my chair, especially as i'd heard a few people mention it was cheap ! .

Think I was expecting £15 for 3 litres, not just the one litre.

Not the kind of thing I would scrimp on, but a shock nevertheless

Hey ho

I know someone who has one of those lovely Nissan GTR's, had a bit of a bump in the door, genuine paint from Nissan is, sit down & take a deep breath, £1000 a litre , needless to say the paint shop sorces it elsewhere

I would say with the oil its always worth getting the best considering what it has to do

The part number i was given was G052 171 A2

Gearbox oil has gone up a lot all over the place due to the cost of raw materials and people.

It's not cheap but £10/litre is normal elsewhere.

Yep, I sourced the correct grade and approved stuff via trade and I think it was around £6.40/litre. Need just less than 2L IIRC?

Shift quality is now 1st class (along with my fresh clutch!) and there's been no notchiness even down near -15.

Good news. Hope mine benefits as yours did.

2.3 litres for mine apparently

Yep, best of luck with it. Doesn't sound like you've had the best of luck with all things gearbox related! My issue I resolved with a new clutch and fluid does sound near enough exactly as you describe yours though...

What are you ending up doing - just changing the fluid to start, before thinking of actual parts renewal?

VW don't make their own oils. Their gear oils are mostly re-badged Fuchs gear oil.

G052171A2 is just a synthetic 75W-80 GL-5 oil. Its used in a variety of cars, including GM, Volvo, Renault, FIAT, BMW etc. You should be able to get this for under £10/litre or about £40 for 5L.

Yep

Gearbox seemed loads better yesterday, with no 'blocking' issues getting into or out of 1st or reverse.

Was 7C, which is the warmest daytime temperature here in a few weeks, so I'm presuming some connection there, rather than just a coincidence.

The more i read on the forum, the more i conclude that notchy gearbox issues is a common complaint with the Octavia.

Mine doesn't quite fit into that category as its a bit more random, and seems that what may appear to be early warning of a problem to me is perhaps just a common characteristic to others.

Figured I'd go with the cheapest and least intrusive option first, namely the compete gearbox oil change.

Can of worms and all that !.

In theory I'm a paid up Freedom member now, but 16 days since making the payment, still waiting for the green logo to demonstrate I'm supporting the site

Off topic, but tell him to avoid light front impacts. One guy had his roll gently into a van, repair cost nearly £12k. It fired the pedestrian safety bonnet, which has a one-off ECU, and that's £1350 alone... :o
