Hi,

Im sure this has been asked before but the search isnt finding anything when searching for DPF - are the new CR engines as bad as the PD engines when it comes to DPF issues? Im asking as my dad is thinking of buying a VW Golf (I know its not a skoda - sorry) 2.0 CR 110ps - but is very worried about the whole DPF thing

any help?

CR's are a world of difference. Making having a diesel still needs to be worth it though as in you need to do the mileage on each journey. Mine has regen'd itself once in 10k and have had no warning lights but I do 20miles each way to work. Saying that after 20miles the oil temp is only just up to temp!

If he doesn't do longish journeys then i would go for the 1.4tsi, cracking engine and my dad still gets 45mpg on a run in his (140bhp Golf GT).

Haven't had any DPF problems with my 140PD Scout even though it has had very short runs for the last couple of months. A collegue who has a 1.6 CR Fabia, and does over 10miles to work every day, has dpf regens every 250miles with increased fuel consumption and lumpy idle.

Certain DPFs utilise 'post injection' to reach regeneration temperatures, this involves adding a small quantity of fuel to the combustion chamber after the power stroke to raise the exhaust gas temperature (EGT) to suitable levels, 550+ degrees C i believe. PD engines rely on cam lobes to pressurise and inject the fuel, this severely limits the post injection capability.

CR units are not dependent on cams as there is one common pump so there is much more scope for multiple injections per stroke.

The CR DPF is literally bolted to the outlet port of the turbo so recieves the exhaust gas at it's hottest. Some PD DPFs were fitted further away so some temperature was lost on the way. I believe the Mk1 Superb PD140 had this issue.

PD engines were never designed with DPF in mind but the CR units had DPFs in the design from day one.

My CR170 has just passed 10,000 miles with no problems whatsoever, high levels of motorway milage help a lot and there have been one or two forced regenerations in traffic, again no problems to report.

My wife does very low mileage these days so we opted for the 1.2TSI as there is no DPF to worry about and no diesel premium slapped on the price.

I know this is an Octy forum but I have a Greenline with a PD engine. It has a DPF. After 18000 miles I have never seen the DPF light. It regens every 120 or so miles. This may sound horrendous for regens but its a complete non event. The engine is smooth, no vibration and it just sounds a little noisier for 5 mins and about 4 miles. If you were at speed many people wouldnt even realise it was doing it. During regen my MPG actually gets better. No really it does. I use no extra fuel at all and return close to 70 mpg every day.

I do 100 miles a day commute so I would expect my DPF to behave itself.

I nealry bought an Octavia but too big for my needs.....I will scuttle back to my Fabia forum now !!
