Cheap vs. Midrange Coilovers

Featured Replies

Anyone gone from Weitec GT's to a more expensive set of coilovers? What were your thoughts?

I had Weitecs on a MK4 polo 6n - it was the top of the range ones about £700 - you could adjust anything, rebound, bump, height everything. they were very good and ride comfort was fine even down 100mm plus - even my wife - who was pregnant with our first child at the time didnt complain about the ride quality at all.

The next polo 6n I had I went for cheapo £180 coilovers made by TA Technix - this was also lowered about 100mm all round. and though it didnt have the adjustment to Weitecs had they weren/t a million miles apart. The front ends both bobbed in that "coilover way" when there is a change of surface on the road. Not really worth spending the £520 more for them!

I have FK Streetline coilovers on my Touran - lowered about 80mm and they are great!! Comfortable without being to firm - plus only £220!!! Saying that - i've ordered a set of the FK Streetlines from Venom for my VRS!!!

In my opinion the Weitecs are one of the best all round kits available for the money and also very popular with other forum members.

I ran GAZ coilovers n my MK4 Golf GT TDI and found they were very good

Not sure they make a coilover for the VRS

Post up how you get on with the FK streetlines. Am after some coils but don't want to spend too much and the roads here are in a hell of a state just now. Wow, just checked... £203 for the FK street setup. Seems pretty good value.

weitecs are good

at the end of the day whats the point in putting super dooper million pound suspension on the fabia when the underlying problem is its a diesel boat and isn't meant to corner quick

Or a better point we drive on roads not race tracks most of the time.

This...

If your going to slam it anyway might as well get the cheapest.. end of the day you cant defy the laws of gravity..

And just for a bit more perspective.. ive got TA-technix on my '5.. cant really fault the quality and price of them, but its been proven that all they are is a generic cheap damper inside the nice shiny sleeve. the damper has trouble controlling the mildly uprated springs they come with which leads to a bouncy ride lol.

I have eibatchs fitted at the moment, but have a set of KW V1's waiting to go on, looking forward to seeing if there is much difference

Id be interested to know this too... Personally i think coilovers are overkill. the eibach/FSD setup was a very good compromise in my eyes.. so not sure what more coilovers would add, apart from being able to go lower (which doesnt automatically mean better handling)

When I say eibatchs I should have added they are the coilovers. I have only had them or standard suspension on the fabia. I have a friend running shocks and springs, I didn't enjoy the ride at all. Felt a bit floaty, and a bit bouncy. I guess if I went from standard to them it'd feel better. :-/

Just out of interest Matt why are you changing from Eibach coils to V1's? Both are stainless, both are height adjustable only, both use KW shocks - it's just the springs that are different (Eibachs basically buy the units in from KW and put their own slightly softer springs on if I'm correct).
