Does this quote sound reasonable?

Featured Replies

Hi there

A local garage has quoted £122 to fit a new catalytic converter for me (I've already sourced the part, cheaply myself). Does this sound reasonable? I thought the garage charged £36/hour last time I went there so they must be assuming 2.5 hours to fit. Surely it doesn't take that long?!

Happy to be corrected.

Cheers

Ross

(Quote was £100+VAT)

That sounds a bit steep to me, I'd have thought no more £75.

Why not do it yourself ????

Hey Bill

That's the sort of figure I was thinking (hoping). The original plan was to fit it myself, but I'm running a bit short on time and figured it would be a pain without a ramp? If it was going to be £75 I was willing to take the hit, but at £125 - I must say, it stings a little!

I'd go to your local ATS or Kwik fit and ask how much they will do it for cash. I had my cat back system fitted for £25 cash.

Hey, tried this but they're all saying that they're not allowed to fit customers own parts. I guess they make most of their profit in the mark-up (which doesn't surprise me..),

i wouldnt trust quick fit to fit their own socks properly let alone parts on my car\1

Its a pain to do on the ground, due to the bolts on the turbo, best if you have a good jack (or 2) to get it jacked right up off the ground then lie under the car, lambda probes can be a pain to get out too, and require a removal tool or some inginuity to remove. Try a local garage, mine quoted £50 to refit my whole new turbo back system, and for that price, i am not going to even think about doing it myself!

I paid about £90 for the cat and did it myself. Can get to turbo/exhaust bolts from the top although slightly more tricky. As you need to get underneath the car for the rear joint, I found it easy to get to the turbo bolts from underneath. The splash guard served it's purpose and the bolts/nuts were easy to remove. Took me about one hr and I used a jack and axle stand as my ramps catch the bumper. Hope this helps

Quote sounds a bit high, but as others have have a go diy takes about an hour (or less if you've got a pit in the garage B) ), Invest in some axle stands as they always come in handy and would save you some money
