White brown residue in engine oil

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have recently been getting a small amount of white / brown residue around the oil filler cap. Has anyone been getting this recently?

My first thought was it might be a head gasket but the coolant is not cloudy and I am not losing any. My second is it might be condensation with all the cold weather we have been experiencing recently. My engine has no fault codes and runs very smoothly. The spark plugs are the normal colour and no obvious oil leaks around the engines head. I drive the car most days on a 50 mile round trip to work and back and very rarely do short journeys.

Any ideas?

Cheers Matt

I still get that now on my vRS and thats with a 150mile trip to work. It does go worse with short trips but it usually takes a good 250-300mile trip to rid it all.

Aye this engine seems quite prone to it in this weather, my old 1.8T never suffered.

Yes it is the old "mayonnaise" problem of old, my car also suffers from this residue around the oil filler cap, though I do a short 5 mile each way commute to work with a 70 mile blast down the motorway every other week. shouldn't be a problem if you can regularly use the car for trips that will get the engine nicely up to temperature for a reasonable time.
