Installing Stereo Problems

Featured Replies

Hello Everyone,

Done a quick search but can't seem to find an exact answer.

Don't know much about car stereo installing, especially for the Felecia, but got a friend today who has installed a few in different cars in the past to install a new stereo today. Took out the standard model, and tried to put the new one in straight away, connecting the plug from the new stereo to the socket that came out of the old one.

When shoved all the way in there isn't any power, but if slightly out, it will flash on and off..

Anyone know how to fix this? I read something about an ISO Adaptor in other threads about stereos

Thanks.

if it works intermittently like that there must be a dodgy connection on the iso block somewhere, i would try making sure all the terminals are properly seated into thier plastic connector

Indeed, it sounds like something's not securely plugged in. Assuming "shoved all the way in" refers to the unit in the dash, and not just the ISO connectors, does it work correctly if you just plug the connectors in without pushing the unit into the dash? If so I'd check that the wiring isn't getting caught somehow as you push the unit in - that's particularly likely if you're trying to trying to fit it into the mounting frame for an original removable unit that's more of a 5-sided box than a 4-sided tube; better to swap it for the one that came with the new unit in that case. It should be straightforward to reach round the back of it from the passenger footwell and make sure everything stays securely connected and nothing's getting squashed or pulled out of place.

Hi,

When we try to connect the cables together- out of the dash, we haven't even attempted to fit the unit in its cage yet- as the power cable makes a connection the unit's front panel flashes as if it is receiving power, but then as we continue to push the iso connectors in all the way until they click and lock into place, the unit does nothing. I have had my volt meter on the car's iso plug, there is a constant 12vdc over both the 'constant' and 'switched' power supplies, and my friend has waggled the car's cable without any effect on the 12vdc output. The unit must be receiving 12vdc for it to even flash in the first place, and as i say the 12vdc is constant from the car, both with the ignition off and on.

The power bit is correct - both the permanent and switched live on the ISO connector are wired direct to the battery on Felicias. Assuming the connectors aren't dirty or corroded, I'd check the installation instructions to make sure the new unit expects the lighting feed where the yellow wire is, and outputs 12V for an auto-aerial to the black wire (actually used to power the amplifier at the base of the roof aerial), since the actual pinouts for ISO connectors aren't entirely standardised. If you need to rewire the connector, the ends of a bent paperclip are a handy tool for releasing individual terminals. It's also remotely possible that a short or miswiring of the speakers could be making it switch itself off to prevent blowing an amplifier, so that might be worth a check too. Other than that I'm fairly stumped and might start suspecting a fault with the unit itself.

Im getting a replacement for the unit next week, if that does not work, then it might be something to do with the miswiring of the speakers like you said Robin, that's what we have thought of that it is switching its self off. Hopefully the unit is faulty and the new one works fine.

For reference, here's how the car's connector is wired :

(although my choice of + and - for the speakers was fairly arbitrary)

'O'' level art at it's best ;-) ;-) :-)
