glow plug light flashing and engine light staying on

Featured Replies

help!! i have the glow plug light flashing and the engine management light on in my car, yet the car drives fine. i recently used redex in my fuel...any ideas if that had anything to do with it,or what the problem could be?

Brake light switch I'd expect.

SWMBOs 1.4 TDI does the same. The fault code that comes up is for the engine speed sensor. I've replaced both of them and still the fault comes back when it's very cold, but the car drives fine and the lights go off after a while so I've stopped throwing money at it trying to fix it until it gets worse and won't run!

Have you had the cam belt replaced recently?

If so the timing may be slightly out and upsetting the sensors. Best get it the fault codes read.

all brake lights work fine and the cambelt was changed approx 2000 miles ago

Off topic, can i ask why your username is newey91?

Who changed the belt and did they lock the pulleys in place and then adjust the cam shaft pulley to accommodate the new belt?

I'd say that the cam timing was out slightly. Best get the fault codes read and then go from there. When I checked SWMBO's car the cam timing was quite a way out but it took about 6 months before the light came on.

Got the fault codes read and they just said it must of been a glitch with one of the sensors and deleted the fault

Did they say what the code was?

It may be back shortly....

Crank sensor I think he said. Just drove 200 miles bacl to work with no problems though

Just because the brake lights work doesnt mean the brake light switch cant be faulty, does more than just the lights.

yep, my mechanic said it also tells the ECU to cut the engine power when brakes are applied, something to do with emissions he said

you can see it if you brake very lightly and try and accelerate slightly, absolutely no power

I reckon that the cam timing will be slightly out and the light will be back on again in the near future. This is what has been happening with SWMBO's 1.4 TDI. I have adjusted the cam timing, but it must still be slightly out as the light comes on occasionally and then goes off again after a few engine starts and stops.

Lights are back. Came on as I was accelerating out of a service station back onto the motorway

Sorry to hear that. I stand by my original comment that the camshaft timing is slightly out, because I've been through this and spent quite a bit replacing sensors and a battery that weren't actually faulty .

Who fitted the belt?

the local garage who does most of the stuff on my car.. the engine felt like it a little sort of jump just before the lights came back on aswell

Take it back and ask them to check the cam timing, otherwise take it to a VAG specialist and ask them.

Pretty sure the code you will have is 16705 - engine speed sensor implausible signal or something similar.

The sensor may indeed be faulty, but I'd get the timing checked first before you start replacing parts.

i'll pop it in when i get back home on wednesday and drop a post on here what they say..should be ok to drive from essex back to the north east shouldn't it?

Should be OK, unless the sensor really is faulty.

The lights come and go on SWMBO's car and it doesn't seem to suffer any ill affects.

well after the garage cleared the fault code the 1st time i managed to drive down here no problems, so i should be able to get back then drop it straight in the garage
