Noise when changing into 3rd

Featured Replies

really odd this. A very intermittent noise has developed when I sometimes change down or up into 3rd. Hard to describe (which doesn't help I know) but it's not a grinding, it almost sounds like a loud squeal or something like a belt slipping. The gearchange itself is fine and the performance is as strong as ever and the clutch doesn't seem to be slipping. When it happens it's louder when I'm going slower. It doesn't seem to be worse if I'm turning or going straight. Odd - any suggestions? Ta.

Sqeaky linkage maybe?

Is the sound only there when you are moving the gear-lever into 3rd. gear, or is it present after you release the gear-lever and in 3rd. gear??

ta. The noise occurs when I'm lifting the clutch pedal up again after having changed into 3rd. As I say it doesn't happen often, but when it does it's quite noticeable. I'd probably say it's been louder when I've been going a bit slower and let the pedal up more slowly. The only similar noise I've ever heard is when I had an A Class Merc and something went wrong with the power steering pump (I think). I don't really want to take it to a garage just yet as it's so intermittent I'm sure they'd not hear it. But equally I do want to know if it's something I should be worrying about. Any thoughts gratefully received.
