Auction Octavia ... next steps ?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just got today my 56 reg 1.9 TDI Elegance from an auction. 53k on the clock. Love at first sight.

Of course after then comes a few minor issues

1. it did not come with a service log book just with the last MOT which recorded the mileage. Fair enough risk taken but I want to correct it from now on.

2. It drives very nicely but when I gently press the brakes I feel a slight vibration. I haven't had that feeling when I pressed the brake hard.

I am planning my next steps so my questions as follow:

1. Get from somewhere a clean and new service log book and start to record services & maintenances

Q: From where can I get one ?

2. Take it for a cambelt / water pump change

Q: Independent or dealer ? Can I expect something in the range or £300-400 - I live in Cambridge.

3. Take it for a major service.( Whether I need this or not I would like to have the car checked overall for the brakes and in general as it is 4 years old).

Q: Independent or dealer ? Any idea about cost ?

Q: Any idea about the vibration when I gently press the brakes ?

Thanks and I look forward for years of motoring with my Octavia.

I would think the only place to get a new service book is Skoda, unless you can find someone with a colour photocopier and a blank service book.

As it is out of warranty I would go to an independant for the service and cambelt at the same time, £300-400 sounds about right, try Googling and see what you came up with.

The vibration, as it occurs only when you press the brake pedal, sounds like warped brake discs, easily enough changed, can be done so along with the pads at the service.

if you cantact Skoda they might be able to provide you with a new service book with some stamps in if they have a ny records of previous services.

The vibration when the pedal is pressed is likely to be contamination on the brake disc surface. This is not unusual with auction cars that may have been standing for a while. Warped discs are actually fairly uncommon.

You have a couple of options:

1. Brake hard from 50-20mph a few times (say 5 times) on a clear road (don't brake to a complete stop). Drive for a few minutes each time to allow the discs to cool. This may well clean the discs up.

2. Replace the discs and pads. With 50K+ on the clock this is what I would do. If you can DIY it will cost you well under £100 for OE quality items from ECP or similar.

Thank you guys for your replies. I will try to contact Skoda regarding the service history and also try to clean my brake disc as recommended.

Cheers,
