Time to change the Octavia

Featured Replies

The time to change the Octavia is fast approaching, the problem is which engine do I go for. I currently have the 1.9PD unit, which I'm quite happy with (this is my second 1.9PD Octavia), but should I go for the 1.6CR or 2.0CR engine next ?

I usually buy a one year old low mileage model from a Skoda dealer, there's a choice of 1.6 cr or 1.9PD's out there, but no 2.0cr's yet.

Has anyone changed from the 1.9 PD 105 unit to a 1.6 CR or 2.0CR unit, if so how do they compare for performance and real economy?

A lot of my mileage is on the motorway and I average around 52 mpg with the 1.9PD.

If you're happy with the performance of the 1.9TDI, I think the 1.6CR would be a good move. The performance is the same at 105bhp but economy should be better I would imagine, given small displacement and the more modern Common Rail technology.

I know friends who I recommended to try an Octavia ended up ordering a 1.6CR model and are delighted with it. They had a 1.9TDI A4 previously. Economy is much better and I think they're averaging around 55MPG.

If economy of purchase and running the car was an issue, I would buy another 1.9. It really depends on what you wish to spend. Good luck with whatever model you choose.

Any reason not to keep it if you're happy?

If you're happy with the 1.9 unit get another, they're bullet proof! The book figures (performance and MPG) are comparable for the 1.6CR but I read on another thread the actual power delivery is not as good - I think more revvy like a petrol if I remember correctly.

I've driven an audi A3 with the 1.6CR 5 speed, I was expecting it to feel a bit weedy but it was far from it, smooth operator and leaps and bounds on from the old 1.9 in terms of refinement. Fair turn of pace on it too.

ive driven the 1.6cr octi at work, i must confess i have the 2.0pd unit in my car and i found the common rail engine quieter for sure, the power delivery is very different from the pd, it felt very flat to me almost like driving a petrol, i get around 47mpg out of my fl 10 plate car, thats with a boot full of tools and kit, and im not shy of using the power either. i would say have a test drive in which ever your looking at and see for your self.

Thanks for the replies.

I will have to arrange a test drive in the 1.6 CR to compare it with the 1.9PD.

With the mileage I cover it's going to be another diesel.

I use the car for my business, so I prefer to change when the car is 3 years old and the mileage isn't too high.

Im my opinion, for what you want, the 1.6CR will fulfill your needs perfectly!
