a little help please

Featured Replies

First of all I would like to say any advice is welcome as I want to get to the bottom of these few problems so here goes....

I've had my fair share of troubles with the petrol version so decided to move on to a diesel only problem is that is throws out plenty of blue smoke when it is idling on start up.... some days it runs rough I put this down to the dpf ( the car is not made for short runs....or so I have been told by the dealer)

Another thing is from time to time the car judders under acceleration if it is driven around local alot...could this be down to the dpf or possibly maf?

Sometimes when I start the car up and after 5 mins try giving it some the coil light keeps coming on but car runs fine

my car is a octavia vrs 2007 57 tdi with the dpf feature with 35k on the clock

Blue smoke would be engine oil related.

Black smoke fuel related.

White (usually) water related.

I think its fairly certain its not the DPF having lived with a couple.

A few more questions

How old is the car

How many miles has it done

Is it using oil

Is the rough starting & smoke worse on colder mornings

the car is a 2007 57 with 35k on the clock and its not using oil.....just some days not particularly cold mornings the car starts chugging out blue smoke its smells of diesel. I heard if the dpf is damaged this could cause it. I'll be plugging in the vag system in tomarrow and see what fault codes it throws up with the coil light

Thinking aloud, should have thought of this before & not sure of this train of thought.

The dpf is designed to catch all particles & stop the car smoking, Ive had DPF issues but never on starting & never had any smoke out of the car so would I be right in thinking if it smokes the DPF is physically damaged, others with more technical knowledge can probably answer that but that may be the problem, if it is then its time to remove it & get a remap, far cheaper than replacing it

If it is physically damaged the ECU will be getting differing messages from the sensors & possibly throwing in extra fuel trying to heat it & causing the smoking, I really dont know just guessing aloud

Thanks for the advice stuart...I am in the process of finding a reputable dpf delete firm...have had a word with p-torque but no by-pass pipe available yet and have heard jbs are a load of cack.

Anyway I plugged the VAG COM system in my car and sure enough after a little hard acceleration from start up the coil light was flashing :( the fault code read : Intake manifold pressure regulator deviation

Could this be linked to the dpf as I can't see these cars suffering from swirl flap problems??

Any thoughts would be hekpful

I would only be guessing so not worth me commenting as it will probably lead you the wrong way, I will only add as per my previous thoughts that the dpf must be failing to allow smoke to come out of the exhaust BUT I COULD BE WRONG

Re deletes personally I would recomend Jabbasport as I use them  There are a few on here who are very happy with Shark Performance as well. I would tend to agree with your thoughts on JBS

If your DPF is broken then can you not just knock the inside out of the pipe, it works on the Scout & use that. If the DPF is still good then there is an argument to keep it & get a new downpipe as they cost a small fortune if you wanted to change back later. Also with so many starting to fail a good one is worth a punt on e-bay

It might be worth you giving someone like Jabba a call to pick their brains, even if you dont end up using them it might give you a better idea of where to start http://www.jabbasport.com/

Thanks for that Stuart....I've bought the Milltek de-dpf pipe from JBS and will be getting P-Torque to fit it and remap the car...hopefully this sorts out the niggles and I can finally enjoy the car :)

You will definately enjoy the new improved model

Blue smoke after a cold juddery start can be unburnt diesel. If the engine runs very rough after a cold start, it can be (a) faulty glow plug(s).

The engine light might be a faulty pressure sensor (measures the pressure before and after the DPF to measure the soot load of the DPF).

This is a well known fault in VAG DPF engines.

Should be stored as a fault code.

thanks for the info guys but I think the juddering is down to the DPF as sometimes the car drives fine, clutch is sharp and responsive so Dpf will be removed soon. Dpf pipe has been delivered today just need a day at P-Torque now :)

Anyone have any experience with a remapped vrs Tdi....I'm thinking of keeping it standard as I don't want to ruin the Turbo with the remap....any comments welcome....oh before I forget I do I upload my Pictures into my post???

Let me just clear this juddering up......it occurs when driving local alot...the car wants to go then it kind of splutters before it starts moving again abit like a new learner driving a car for the first time lol Anyways waiting on P-Torque to book me in for a day. They have got a hectic schedule with one of their contracted race cars so have to wait :(

Heres a few pics of her anyway

Blue smoke would be engine oil related.

Black smoke fuel related.

White (usually) water related.

That's a bit too simple, diesel smoke carries a lot of messages!

See here for a more thorough explanation of the different types of smoke and what they mean.

It can be quite hard to tell blue and white smoke apart, especially if the car only makes smoke when moving.

Rule of thumb, if the oil level is stable, it's white smoke!

Ba**ard engine mangement light on today :S Plugged VAG COM and showed as EGR fault that explains the coil light thats been flashing for the last few weeks. On cold start up after 5 mins once the turbo has kicked in it would flash it up but switch back off if I turned the key off then back on.

Never mind another expected bill as per usual with these Vw group cars-the EGR a common problem on A6's never thought these had it too

  • Author

Just a quick question is the EGR valve electronic or mechanical and can it therefore be cleaned??

  • Author

Got the car into P-torque today for the DPF delete and remap also getting the EGR tuned downed after having to replace it yesterday. The amount of **** in there was unbelievable and don't blame the car for screwing up.

Anyways can't wait to get hold of it today :)
