Slim Slot DVD

Featured Replies

Quick question.

Are all SATA slim slot dvd burners the same? Ala the ones found in the likes of the HP IQ500 series integrated media PC's.

Do they all have combined data/power connections?

The plate on the end maybe a different shape. I recently swapped a DVD drive from a dell to a toshiba laptop and had to modify it with a stanley knife and file to get it to fit properly.

I've swapped a couple of sata dvd drives in laptops recently.

One of them had an adapter on the end to make it fit the custom connection inside the laptop, but once that was removed, it was a standard "single" data and power connector.

I'm pretty certain that all sata connections are the same, whether it's on 2.5", 3.5" or 5 1/4" drives.

Slimline optical drives use a standard form factor so yes, any SATA one will have the same connector in the same place. To clarify the above, the data connector is indeed the same as any other SATA device, but the power connector for slimline drives uses a different standard (smaller since it omits the 12V and 3.3V lines)

Thanks.

So do they all have the data/power connectors right next to each other like the bottom picture above?

Thanks.

They should do, as long as you are comparing like for like. No good between sata and ata slim-drives for instance....

Thanks,

Turns out finding a slot loading sata drive is a PITA.

Or finding one cheap enough anyway. Managed to find a refurbed like for like , so will pray and face east its OK.

They're not the commonest, that's for sure. However, a few of the places I usually buy from list one or two models - if you're interested, Novatech seem to be the only place I can find that has any actually in stock.

How about this instead?

Has to be slot loading due to being inside a HP IQ500 all in one touch screen pc .....no room for the drawer to open.

Hopefully the refurbed unit will be fine.
