tyres or wheel bearings

Featured Replies

have just purchased a superb ii 2009 has 4 months warrenty left had brand new tyres when i bought it so had never driven it on originals. well after driving it for a while its really noisy sounds like nearside wheel bearing but doesnt change on turning left or right sounds worse at 45 to 50 mph but present all the time. also really bad when slowing from 20 mph to a stop drones like an old london bus stopping. doesnt matter what gear its in even sounds if you coast to a stop in nautral. been back under warrenty had new wheel bearing but still the same. skoda now say its tyres. they said they changed front wheels off another car and noise stopped but changed them back before i picked up car so i have no proof. just worried as only 4 months warrenty left and dont want to find its gearbox later. anyone else had same problem.

It's easy enough to check if it's tyres or not: Look closely at the tread blocks, particularly on the rear tyres, and if they've formed into wedges, higher at the trailing edge when the car's going forwards, then it's the tyres. The phenomonon is called "saw-toothing" and can easily be sorted if you don't have directional tyres. Swap the LH tyres to the RHS and vice versa.

Directional V-grooves can be noisy (I have Toyo T1-Rs so I know) but that's normally a speed and surface-dependant roar. What you're describing seems to fit no known pattern.

Why only 4 months warranty on a 2009 car remains?

Should it not be a max of 2 years old now, and have almost a year left at worse?

What kind of tyres are fitted?

Al.

tyres are enduro 916+ runway as for warrenty car was registered may 2009 hence 4 months not the most expensive tyre but still £80 a corner

Skoda warranty is unlimited mileage for the first 2 years then a third year up to 60,000 miles. If the car has exceeded this mileage the warranty will expire May 2011.

I had a set of Eagle F1s and they were extremely noisy. A cheaper tyre with a crude V pattern could make this even worse.

I would take it back and insist on the dealer proving the tyre theory by swapping to another set so you can hear the result yourself.

yes its done 49000 now but i do a lot of miles. think that will be my best option to go back dont think there going to like me much but think i should of been given the option of a test drive with other tyres on

If they are saying its the tyres causing the racket they shouldn't have an issue confirming it for you. 49k will no doubt mean the end of the warranty when the car hits 2 years old. Might be worth going for a third party warranty scheme.

If the tyres are directional, you could swap them with the rears and see if the noise moves to the rear of the car... but to be honest, I'd be surprised if it was the tyres. Perhaps get an independent garage just to do an mot style check on that corner to highlight any bushes which may have worn as these aren't always that noticeable.
