Bootliners ... WHY?

Featured Replies

I am in need of a fully waterproof bootliner for my Superb combi, it needs to be able to fit on top of the optional variable boot floor and COVER the aluminium restraint rails (this is the most important bit, as I will be transporting wet dive gear and salt water and aluminium are not exactly compatible!).

So the Skoda Rubber Bootliner - Vehicles with Raised Boot Floor or Partition System Part Number: 3T9061190B @ £41, is unfortunately no good for me (as it doesn't cover the rails)

Next on the Skoda list is the Heavy Duty Boot Dish Part Number: 3T9061162 @ £153, but I can find no reference to whether it is compatible with the variable boot floor??

There are other options available from various companies, one of these is "Over the top"", whilst they look good quality im not so sure they are ideal to be going under soaking wet diving gear due to the material they are made from? not to mention their prices IMO match their name, even with the 10% January discount they come in @ over £260 (£285 before discount) PLUS postage :o

I thought about making a bespoke one out of a sheet of rubber/butyl/EPDM and sealing the corners, but I'm not so sure the smell will be a good idea as the liner would stop in the car, PVC is out of the question as it will be too slippery.

So over to you...

1/ What have you got fitted to your combi's?

2/ What do you use it for transporting (to give me an idea if it is suitable for my needs).

3/ Do you have the variable boot floor?

I have exactly the same predicament. My boot is full of air conditioning tools and related equipment, the vac pump has a litre of oil in it and if allowed to tip over will transfer said oil to boot floor!

At the moment I am using a dust sheet to protect the carpet :dull:

The Skoda boot cover offerings are inadequate at best. I don't use the ally rails and want to cover them up.

This is the best offering so far: http://www.towequipe.co.uk/1/1/1498551-premium-rubberised-boot-liner-skoda-superb-combi-est09-prem192494.html

I had a very similar boot liner in my Octavia combi and it resisted oil spills and acidic chemicals.

I found the towquipe one but was unsure of the:

"They are also designed to enable you to still use the tie down hooks in the boot of your vehicle."

So they may not cover the rails also .. unless anyone knows different??

I assume the "Superb Combi Estate for lower and upper boot" means the variable boot floor?

The 'Heavy Boot Dish' is a rediculous price - £153?! For that? :o

As is the aptly named one you found ;)

Thought about Hatchbag? They have a loyal following and many positive feedback comments on here about their products. While I see they don't currently offer anything for the Superb that I can see, I think they're often quite open to development of new items? Could certainly be worth dropping them a line and you could help them out with development of something suitable? If they're agreeable, you could benefit for something that had design features to help you out what you're needing to carry, and also with the price

Just a thought....

Steve

I emailed Hatchbag about a month ago and they said they don't intend to design a liner for the Superb 2 unless they receive more interest.

With regards to the towequipe liner, the reference to the ability to use the tie down hooks may be the same as the one fitted to my old Octavia, it had pre shaped sections that could be cut to allow tie hooks to come through the liner if necessary, i never cut my ones out and they held up fine.

I saw Hatchbag and thought exactly what you did Steve then found they were in Wallasey.. bit far from Folkestone emoticon-0106-crying.gif

I will drop them an e-mail to see if they have one in the pipeline though.

Anyone used a Rhino bootliner? @ £75 they seem reasonable but from the photo's they look just like a heavy duty seat cover??

TheTowquipe one does cover the rails, but is flexible enough to allow use of the rail fittings if required. It is quite good quality and has a nice soft nonslip centre, the raised sides are a very good height for spill retention.

I looked on their main website and they were out of stock, but googled and found they have an e bay shop where they were listed as in stock and at a considerably lower price. So check prices on both. Ordered 3 Jan delivered 7 Jan.

Suitable for Combi with or without raised floor.

Re Hatchbag, the more people that enquire, the more they'll consider it worthwhile.

But other than that, if it were me in this position with the choice and price of those available, I'd probably have a go at designing something myself.

Hi,

Just picked up my car today from the dealers, I have bought the 'Overthetop' boot liner and I have the varible boot floor. I'll send picks in the next day or so.

My intention is to stick salty wet dive gear in the back, and also stinky slobbery boxer dogs ( not at the same time ). With the covers in place they look fantastic, the great thing about them is when they get crappy you just stick them in the wash. I know they are not cheap, but they are great looking, practical and are worth every penny.

Buy cheap, buy twice.

I emailed them last August and they didn't show much interest in the Skoda Combi.

There is also something called a 'Boot Buddy'. It covers the floor, sides and back of the rear seats but it just doesn't look like a quality product from the pictures :S I hope I'm wrong.

It would be ideal as I could do with protecting all surfaces in the boot including the bumper due to the crap I haul around for work. Bottles of refrigerant and Nitrogen are perfect for trashing an interior.

Anyone seen a Boot Buddy 'in the flesh' as it were?

EDIT: Linky

I saw the bootbuddy also, but the thing that put me off was "The panel that protects the back of your seats is fully detachable" so I assume it cannot be watertight? they also recommend the use of their anti-slip mat so must be pretty smooth/slippery.

They do look pretty good otherwise.

Yes, there must be a gap that runs top to bottom on the corners to facilitate the fold flat/detachable option.

They look like three sheets of plastic type material that are poppered together, I would remain sceptical until I saw one for myself.

I think it was Auto Express that gave it a good review but we are talking well over £100 with a few options - needs to be top notch for that money.

I use the old heavy duty rubber liner I usedin my Octavia estate and it's still wide enough and long enough to curl up at the edges to create a liner to keep odd spillages going onto the carpet. I bouoght mine from Roofbox.co.uk for about £35.

2/ What do you use it for transporting (to give me an idea if it is suitable for my needs).

I use if for my big dirty bitch!

3/ Do you have the variable boot floor?

Nope - didn't need this or the big dirty bitch wouldn't fit in the boot!

There's one for sale on Ebay that has a small lip and states it fits the lower & upper boot, costs about £60

I've not posted the link, because I think its against the rules here, but it will be easy to find

Well they resonded yesterday saying pretty much the same as they told you both.

But other than that, if it were me in this position with the choice and price of those available, I'd probably have a go at designing something myself.

I am really tempted with trying that - the only thing stopping me is finding a supply of rubber sheeting that will not make the whole car smell of rubber.

The In-Laws have a boot buddy in the back of his Cee'd Estate - it's NOT very impressively made in my mind - just a folded bit of plastic....

Did you go for the "ANTISLIP BOOT LINER MAT Skoda Superb II Estate 2010 On" @£27 then or the "Premium Rubberised Boot Liner Skoda Superb Combi Est09>" which is twice the price?

Thanks, what's the material like, is it rubber or a plastic?

My main concern is my diving kit sliding around on it as you say the anti-slip mat area isn't very big.

The antislip area is quite small, I will try and get some photos and PM.

Hi, had lots of trouble with picasso, not paying for storage place for photos. I have taken pics of the bootliner in place, if you want I can send them via email.

Sorry for trouble.

Thanks to darren tt for the photo's of the "Over the top" bootliner:

It certainly does look like a decent quality and perfect for those with dogs, personally for me (no pets) I think a harder wearing rubber liner will be better.

Good pics, but can't see that 'OTT' being decent for scuba gear and that type of thing. Anything where you want to keep moisture away from the car's interior.

Wouldn't know much about that I'm afraid, but I'm sure you can get a treated version or something? Not noticed the standard Skoda liners smell like that, so it must be possible.

  • Author

Fully agree Steve, my old OE bootliner was a rubber textile material and hardly smells of rubber at all, I think where my problem will be is that most rubber sheeting will be used for applications like pond liners and roof membranes where the smell of rubber is not important, so it will be untreated.
