Anti roll bar drop links, easy to replace?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Im changing my FARB bushes and have noticed the drop links are also a common item to fail and need renewing, so i may as well do them at the same time? (only about £11 each)

are they easy to replace? If so what torque settings are required for the bolts?

Regards,

Neil.

Very easy to replace once car is in the air and wheel removed. They only hook up from ARB to suspension strut. Torque setting 22 lbs ft

Did mine last night - took less than an hour from driving in to driving out.

Cheers guys, i've seen a post about having to hold a spanner on one part whilst tightening the nut? Is that the case?

Yes....you have to hold the ball joint to stop it spinning when tightening the nut up. 15 or 16mm if i can recall. Nut is 17 or 18mm

Right guys, i ordered the drop links from VWSPARES here http://www.vwspares.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=257

But the design is different to the ones i have taken off,,, so to hold the ball joint still whilst tightening the bolt, an allen key must be used at the top of the thread and held still (bolt side, does that make sense?) , but here lies my problem. Due to having to hold the allen key, i have to use an open spanner to tighten the bolt so i cannot use my torque wrench?

How do i torque them correctly? I appreciate its only a low (22 lbs) but will it make a big difference if they are over tightened?

Thankyou,

Neil.

You torque up the allen part with a allen socket (easy to get single ones in B&Q or halfords)and hold the balljoint with spanner

Make sure the short bolt is at the bottom,or you will puncture pancake pipe.

Thanks guys, (small thread is at the bottom) so i have to hold the nut still with a spanner and allen torque the thread anti-clockwise back into the nut?

Thanks for you help Bowders.

  • 2 months later...

Is it defnitely 22lb/ft?

The Service Manual Running Gear Octavia I have says:

90Nm (top nut) and

15Nm and turn a further 90 degrees (bottom nut)

but there's no mention of nyloc nuts

22lb/ft is 30nm?

Interesting as Im sure Bowders or someone else has used cheap drop links in the past and found them to fail?

Id suggest keeping hold of the old ones as potentially they are a better made part.
