Wall mounting LCD TV

Featured Replies

Looking at getting a new TV for the bedroom and I'm hoping to mount it on the wall.

The wall in question is a stud/partition (whichever you want to call it) wall, so what would a 22'' be ok to mount on it?

As long as you can find a stud no problem.

Me, I have what thought were stud partitions up until the point I tried to find a stud. Transpired the walls were 2 sheets of plasterboard with a carboard waffle inbetween, no studs. Had to mount of the ceiling joists.

Crikey, sounds like a bodged job that...

Will have a good check and see what luck I get.

Anyone know what the limit for weight would be for going in plaster board.

You could use spring toggles, see link below, info says they are plenty strong enough. I would avoid interset fixings as they can be a pain to get in cleanly.

Just to say the reason I am so negative is not that I doubt the plasterboard can hold the tv. Its more of a question that the TV can act as a big lever, hence someone dust overly aggressivley etc rips the thing of wih a chunk of wall.

If it was mine there I would nly fix to studs.

Ah yes used those type of fittings before for some shelves. Will have to check out weights next I think, although not all sites says the weights for each TV... :smirk:

If the fixing plate is large enough then using these will be sufficient (but with the lever caveat mentioned) and 10x better than the ones simon links to above. I'd echo what he says about interset fixings as well.

I had the same problem in my bedroom, couldn't find a stud in a decent enough position so just mounted it where i could.

I just downsized to a 22'' LCD as the 32'' would have never held in place (was considering an LED but there doesn't seem to be any decent 22'' LED's about that are wall mountable....mmm), i used the following fixings as linked above http://www.screwfix.com/prods/34215/Fixings/Cavity-Fixings/Metal-RediDrivas-50mm-Pack-of-100

They seem ok so far, fingers crossed.

If they fail i was thinking about mounting a square sheet of wood (smaller than the TV so it's not visable) to the wall, and mounting the TV to the wood, should give the fixings more of a bite.

I've had a 42" LCD mounted across two studs for the last 2 years or so with no issues. A single stud should be fine for a 22". Wouldn't be confident mounting it just to the plaster though. Even if it's fine to start with I'd have thought the plaster would fatigue and slowly degenerate.

That is correct, i have fitted other items to stud walls (not using a stud) and the plaster has fatigued, the fixings have become loose.

My 22'' has been ok for 2 years though, i guess it depends on the wall mount you use, mine is quite a large square so the weight is spread over a larger surface area, also it is a low profile mount so is fixed very close to the wall.

The toggle clips will hold around twice the load of the ones above, plus I've had a fair few rip out when entering the centre screw.
