Someone please HELP!

Essentially position number 1 has stopped working which isn't exactly a big issue but i find if the fan is off everything steams up and fan position 2 is generally too strong & too noisy to use all the time.

Having checked here I thought it was the resistor pack but speaking to my VW mechanic cousin he seemed to think it would the the controller panel in the dash.

With a new panel running into 3 figures and the resistor being £30 ish I decided to put up with it until something came along.

And come along it did in the for of the SDI being broken via here. I was offered a good price for the controller and the resitor; so was ready to fix the issue. B)

Having followed my Apogee's brilliant guides before to get rid of leave from my fan I removed the glove box and went in hunt of the resistor pack.

What an absolute ******* of a job that is! Now i have small hands but the amount of room to get the resistor out is ridiculous.

Half an hour, some swearing and a lot of removed skin later and the resistor pack was out and replaced.

Keys in, fan on, still no fan position 1.

A short break to warm up and take on refresfment and read Apogees also brilliant guide on changing the heater control panel.

remove the entire lower dash? Again what a faff but ok.

Trim removed, dash out, old panel removed , new panel put in, ignitinon on fan on, STILL no number 1!!

Now unless by some huge coincidence the panel i bought also has a faulty position 1 I reckon the problem is something else.

Anyone know what??

Faulty switchgear? (assuming that isn't the control panel you speak of)

Faulty switchgear? (assuming that isn't the control panel you speak of)

Indeed it is.

I changed the entire switch/dial pack controller panel this morning and it made no difference :'(

The resistor pack must be ok, generally when they fail you only have a full speed fan and nothing else. When the one in my old mondeo commuter hack failed, it was also accopanied by a nice burning smell through the air vents.
